Top 10% Losing its Value
I've been with the org for a while now, and it seems to me that the top 10% lists have become almost obselete. Before they would simply be a chart to show and to honor the best and most influential AMV's this site has shown. Yet this site is growing larger by the day, and over time the top 10% seems to have changed into merely a popularity chart showing the latest hits. I'm not saying this in a bad way. The site has been going for such a long time now that it just gets really old seeing the same old videos at the top 5 every time. A perfect example is Euphoria, which was a top notch amv for it's time. Yet after seeing it at #1 for years on end, it caused a stream of strait 1 opinions for it just to lower it's rank on the charts.
What makes matters worse is how the list really doesn't represent the quality of an amv in terms of when it was released. Some of the greatest amv's of thier time now seem out of date or slow paced. I think it's time we honor some of our great amv's not for thier score, but for thier landmark impact on our wonderful site.
I don't think we should get rid of the top 10%, but I do strongly believe we need to implement a system of retirement for video's that have been ranked highly on the charts for long periods of time. These video's shall be removed from the charts, and go onto a whole new list, becoming a sort of Hall of Fame for amv's. I think it's about time we started to honor those amv's that started it all.

This is a brilliant idea, as it'll cycle more new videos into the top ten without destroying the accomplishments of the old videos.

It was once dicussed is to add a factor in for age...
This would be something like the older the video gets, the lower it's score. If you add in frequencey of opinion (hown many per month) then you would end up with older videos with less current opinions moving down the charts...
I'm still all for this kind of concept, just a formula to incorporate that needs to be proposed

Do you know that you can filter the top 10% by months/years? You can view lists of vids from:
All Years
Last 30 Days
Last 3 Months
Last 6 Months
Last 9 Months
Last 12 Months
It's not exactly what you're asking for, but I find these filters to be very useful.

The top 10% lost it's value when people decided there is nothing wrong with giving all 1s to remove videos from the top 10%. Cycling out older videos would do nothing to correct this. Do what I do, ignore the top 10% and stick with the top 30 favorite videos. There's a lot less movement of vids on this list and a lot more older vids there. However unlike the top 10% lists I don't often find myself thinking 'Who the hell rated this piece of shit so highly?'

The problem with my proposal is that with all the changes in the top 10% recently, there isn't a real formula we could make to determine which past vids could get in. The vids have all been distorted by people trying to bring them off the top charts. In order to make up for previous distortions, there would have to be a long (and most likely ridiculously annoying) debate to determine which past vids were worth a damn. Now granted, that sounds like a big waste of time and seems just stupid to attempt, but I still think it's worth attempting.godix wrote:The top 10% lost it's value when people decided there is nothing wrong with giving all 1s to remove videos from the top 10%. Also, the problem with the top 30 favorite vids is that there just isn't enough slots for all the noteworthy vids. The main reason the top 10% lost it's value was because over time there was just too many vids to accurately gauge which was better. One vid may have had much more effects then another vid, but the first one was a milestone in amv making, and was way ahead of its time. The surge of vids really demands that we take out the great vids of the past.
A key factor that I forgot to mention about this hall of fame is that it should not even consider the AMV's score. Once in the hall of fame, a video should be placed in its specific category by date, with a reason for its addition to the hall. No score should be shown, nor should the videos be ranked in the hall by rank in the first place. The hall is not about rank, but about respect for someones innovation to the AMV process.
Like I said, the biggest problem here would be decided which past vids make it into the hall, and then afterwards (once the top 10% has become representative of good videos again) we could determine a real formula for what makes it in. If we wanted to truly spend some time on this idea, we could reject the idea of a formula all together, and just make a process of submitting a sopposed worthy vid to some forum or something, and then have a discussion over whether or not it should be added or not. Of course, a video would have to have been on the top 10% list somewere in the first place before it can be proposed, but afterwards it can be sent to the judges for discussion.
Either way, I still think that this idea should not just be talked about, but acually implemented in the near future.
