I have a question about recording audio through the computer

Post by EvaXephon » Sat Jul 09, 2005 6:05 pm

I need the audio that plays during a video file I have. I don't have any programs for ripping audio from video. I've tried putting my microphone up to my speakers, playing the video, and recording the sounds coming out of my speakers, but it's not working.

I heard once that it was possible to have your computer record whatever sounds were currently being played out of the speakers. Does anyone know how to do this?

What format?

If it's an MPEG file, you can use TMPGEnc's MPEG Tools to demux the audio stream.

If it's an AVI file, you can open it in VirtualDubMod and either demux the stream or decode it to a PCM .WAV file (both options are on the Stream List).

It's neither an MPEG nor an AVI - it's an WMV. Will that be promblematic? >_<

I use TMPGEnc pretty often, but I never really tried out that many of its tools...

Ah - I'm a fool. The file was an MPEG after all.

I opened it in TMPGEnc and used the MPEG Tools. I'd never even known that such a feature existed. I feel pretty embarassed about that. Anyway, I managed to rip the sound.

Thanks, Scintilla!

(Sorry for the double post. I'd edit my above post if I could, but there's no option. This topic may be locked now)

Yes sir!

The standard tool that you can use is windows sound recorder, I'm not quite sure if you can edit the bitrate or the sample rate of the files, but it is possible to hit record at any time and it should record up to 60 seconds of whatever audio is playing through your system.
Yes very dodgy indeed! :P

That is, as long as you've enabled the proper recording input in your volume controls (sndvol32); Creative calls this "What U Hear", but "Wave/MP3" should also work. Don't know how it is with other sound cards.

(As opposed to, say, "Microphone", I mean.)
