BINGU

Shiny new alternative to every videophile's favorite codec. Anyone willing to do some comparisons with whatever's the latest xvid?

If you can afford to wait until December, I'm sure doom9 will include DivX 6 in their annual codec roundup...
The linked forum post wrote:DivX 6 marks a new era in DivX history. Where before DivX was simply a codec technology, today we expand the DivX universe and add the DivX Media Format to our media ecosystem. Bringing with it advanced media features such as alternate audio tracks, multiple XSUB(tm) subtitle streams, XTAG(tm) video tags, chapter points, interactive video menus with scene selection, multiple titles and more, the DivX Media Format creates a true home theater experience both on and off the desktop.
I think the real question is, anyone want to do some comparisons with whatever's the latest Ogg Media container?

What I want to know is whether anyone will actually USE the .DIVX format...

Hrm, I don't see anything in that text about new or improved encoding/decoding quality, it looks like the changes are mostly a proprietary answer to the versatility and features of the Matroska container.

Found this thread on doom9 forum, looks like there are a few tweaks to the encoding/decoding capabilities.
DivX wrote: DivX codec now includes PSNR optimized H.263 quantization for superior retention of detail when compressing the picture.

4MV search is enabled in Portable, Home Theater, High Definition and Unconstrained profiles, allowing for better quality at lower resolutions, improved sharpness and reduced ringing artifacts.

Multiple consecutive bi-directional coding is enabled in High Definition profile. All bi-directional coding now uses the packed schema. Up to two consecutive B-VOPs are enabled in High Definition profile, and up to three are enabled in Unconstrained profile.

Heck, I probably will ^_^! I already got the multiple audio streams to work by simply putting in two audio files in VdubMod and exporting the avi with a .divx extension. I think this might catch on since the Star Wars: Revelations .divx version is really spiffy. Since DivX is officially supported by software and hardware vendors I think it should turn out good.
Insert clever text/image here.

Well, when I said that, I was kinda implying "... considering that Ogg Media and Matroska are already so popular among digital video people AND non-proprietary formats".

But it's good to know that it works. :)

.dvx gets no love?
That would have been my first choice, .dvx.

The problem is that neither Matroska nor Ogg Media have significant marketing force -- or, for that matter, much credibility outside geek circles.

From what the DivX Media Format can do, Matroska seems to be technically vastly superior; however, unfortunately, the better format doesn't always win.

I agree. Mkv rules. I wish more fansub groups would use it instead of the std xvid stuff they do now. They need to expand their horizons.

MKV is a container. XviD actually works right now, and I think some are switching to h.264. But if it still works, why try and fix it?
