It's called masking, and it really depends on the action/animation that's going on in both the background and foreground clips which will make it easy or hard to do.

Just take the pen tool and draw a "mask" around whatever image you want to composite over.

are you talking about Photoshop, because i dont believe after effects has a pen tool. also i should have mentioned this earlier, the images above are moving. i got this first image from istiv amv- spirt never dies and the second one i got from AbsoluteDestiny’s amv- i wish i was a lesbian. I just want to know how this is done in after effects, sorry for the trouble.

After Effects has a pen tool. Search the help for Masks.

ah, stupid me. well i was trying out the pen tool but its difficult to get the image i want. plus there are levels of the pen tool which im not sure is the right one to use. one of them has a +, the other - and the other one just makes lines across the image.

The help topics should explain what the + and - and all do.

I find rotobezier masks are easier to handle than the normal masks, but they suck for making sharp corners.

No. A matte refers to a black and white image, where one color determines what parts are transparent.

I pefer point to point my self... and if you do it right only some points have to move - my next video I think has over 40% of the video masked with keyframes
