Media files playing at abnormal speeds

Post by The Wired Knight » Thu Mar 24, 2005 10:09 pm

All my media files, mpegs, avis, mp3s, wavs etc etc are all playing at abnormally fast speeds but it's not even a static speed. As a result the video and audio has to jump to keep up, anybody have a clue how to fix this? I allready ran scandisk which said there were no errors.

Well originally it was happening everywhere except Adobe Premiere. Sinec then I've been messing with my computer to try and resolve it and now the problem is isolated to WMP and Divx player.

Originally Winamp was on that list as well but reinstalling winamp solved that problem. That sadly didn't work for Divx or WMP. So I know it's not a soundcard or driver issue since now the problem is only pertanent to those two players (sound works fine in my games, adobe premiere, real player, quicktime, winamp and everythign else that uses sound).

The audio skipping also causes the video to skip to keep up but I know it's not a video issue since when I play files that have no associated audio the video plays fine in both wmp and divx.

I've tried default and my direct sound device, neither worked. YEs, this happens to all files that contain sound without exception. The only time files play properly is if they are being played in programs other than WMP and Divx player.

so the question is, what did reinstalling winamp do that it didn't for the other 2.

i was having this problem with a series of MPEG2s at one point...but only mpg2s.

some kinda direct show problem? Do you have a dedicated mpeg2/dvd program like Windvd or something?

A few ideas:
  • 1. Start going though all the programs you've installed recently and start uninstalling them until the problem goes away.

    2. Try reinstalling/upgrading DirectX.
Life's short.

Oddly enough, uninstalling old programs is what caused this to occur indirectly. I had downloaded a series of programs, uninstalled them and one took something vital with it killing all sound, I reinstalled windows and was presented with the problem I have at hand.

I allready tried number two, directx didn't solve it.
