Stupid After Effects question about keyframing

Ok, I have kind of gotten out of touch with making AMVs, but when I got interested again I found After Effects (the clouds parted, birds whistled, and I drulled) There is this one tutoral Im trying to follow for making animated brush strokes... But I am stuck on a part and I feel dumb as all hell for forgetting this (cause this is a general video issue) The step I'm stuck on says
"11. Set A KEY FRAME in the beginning for the mask shape
12. Go to the end of the layer
13. Drag on all nodes with the curve pen tool on at a time creating different curved loops... "

When I think of a KEY FRAME I have a timeline marker of some sort in mind.
What is the type of Key Frame that they are referring to?

I know I know, Classroom in a book. Dont feel up to buying it JUST yet. Thanks for any help.

Hey, I really appreciate the reply!
I liked the links to the trapcode plug-ins! Those were cool. The information held in the beginer tutorial was cool. But the only reference to key frames was, in/out refering to the preview/rendering space. But is that what the guy is refering to in the tutorial that I mentioned?

Apparently you didn't read it well?

Click this arrow to expand the transform properties. We want to make the image fade in over the first second of the video. We will do this by keyframing the opacity value of the image. With the timeline at the beginning of the composition, click the stopwatch icon beside opacity. This tells AE that we want to animate this value. A keyframe will automatically be set at the current frame. We want the image to fade in, so change the opacity value to zero. Then move the timeline marker over about one second, and change the opacity value to 100. Another keyframe will be automatically set when you change the value. Press 0 to preview and see the image fade in.

AE has awesome key framming... Not only can you set keyframes, but you can maipulate the cures that govern what happens beteen keyframes.. I use that a lot for accelerations, etc...
