Noise.

Post by atrophiedXlungs » Thu Jan 20, 2005 1:42 pm

I'm probably the only one who likes it on this board, but...making a thread about noise music is a good way to find out for sure. If you don't know what noise is, the only way to explain it is for you to hear it.

There you can listen to, but not dowload, some Merzbow. Of course, if you have any sense, you won't, because you'll hate it.

I have a bunch of noise but I haven't given much of it a real listen, just Pulse Demon and Magnesia Nova by Merzbow (Magnesia Nova rocks, btw). And if noise-rock or industrial-noise counts, I've got some Lightning Bolt/Nurse With Wound/Einstürzende Neubauten/Zeni Geva/Boredoms sitting around.

Word of advice to anyone who doesn't know what to expect from Mr. Lungs' mp3 samples: it actually helps to listen to it really closely and consciously. It makes the difference between getting totally lost in it and getting a headache from it.

Well, I'm always up for talking about noise rock / noisecore as well, because Melt-Banana is an amazingly great band.

Some Man or Astro-Man? drifts over from experimental and surf rock into pure noise.

Hmm, interesting enough, but I prefer soundscapes and just ambient stuff. This is somewhat irritating by comparison
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Melt Banana is some of the silliest weird music I've heard in my life.

If he's doing his job right, Merzbow should be more than just 'somewhat' irritating. :p

I just got an album by Wolf Eyes called "Slicer." I assume some of you have heard this before, but I had hitherto only had their split with Black Dice and hadn't really given that much of a listen. It's really amazing, almost ambient but still fairly abrasive and loud at times. But then I think my threshold of noisepain has been lowered a bit by years of Merzbow.

I think I like Slicer better than Burned Mind. Seems more complex, less concerned with stabbing you in the face and more with just creeping you out. But they're both good albums.

Good streaming audio of Kevin Drumm up on the Mego site. Check your speakers before playing it through or you'll be sorry. It's cool stuff. There's rhythm and feeling to it. I've yet to come across any Merzbow that does that, but there's hours and hours (days and days?) of it that I haven't heard, so I'm sure I've only scratched the surface with him.
