sorry, but I'm really not getting this.
on the VCL media player it says select a mirror and I don't see anything else.

for the mplayer(which appears to be the better choice), it says:
Source and Binaries
blaa blaa blaa

codecs
blaa blaa

fonts
blaa blaa

skins:
blaa blaa blaa blaa

I only know what skins and fonts are and I don't see anywhere that says download the player.

Can someone just like tell me where to go and then which options to pick?

thanx :x
vegita is best.

The most commonly used formats here on the Org (not including the WMVs, of course), are AVI and MPEG-1, both of which Quicktime can play (although for the majority of the AVIs you'll need DivX for Mac, available here: www.divx.com ).

Window Media Player plays everything...
Except the Quicktime and RP media.
But who wants to play that anyhow (most times)?
Also WMP10 is good.

Cause this person is using a Mac. :o Thus, he wants Quicktime videos, which are indeed rare. Most of the Mac creators export to .avi for greater cross-platform compatibility, since as said above, Quicktime can play .avi files as long as you have the right codecs.
Life's short.

It doesn't, by default, handle Matroska or Vorbis streams (despite the fact that DirectShow filters exist).

It, and pieces of Windows Media itself, attempt to call home to Microsoft. I don't care for WHAT purpose; they shouldn't be bothering with that. I have them blocked from my firewall.

Its interface, in my opinion, sucks. It's ugly and too big. A media player should be minimalist, and should avoid flashy crap by default. Those who think that flashy interfaces actually give you something can turn that on later.

Personally, I've always found the WMP7+ interface quite easy to use and nice-looking besides.

And I never really figured out WinAmp's.

I just find it to be overblown. I don't want to see ooh-aah gradients or whateverthefuck is in the latest version; I don't want the player to suck up 75% of my screen with some stupid visualization pane, big honking option toolbar, or whatever. I just want a simple, usable interface. The two Windows media players that I've found that actually do that are WMP 6.4 and Media Player Classic.
