HuffYUV or Uncompressed RGB?

Post by Ebberkenezzer » Wed Oct 20, 2004 7:29 am

I think I remember seeing a post somewhere a while ago about someone saying to use VirtualDubMod and save your clips using HuffYUV or Uncompressed RGB but I can't seem to find it.

So can someone explain to me what's the difference and which one I should use? So far I've been using HuffYUV but I just want to make sure.

HuffYUV compresses the files somewhat and changes it to YV scale, if memory serves. I'd reccomend HuffYUV because it's smaller <_<.

Well, it only changes it to YUV if you specify "Convert to YUY2" under the RGB options. I personally do, because I like the extra space it saves, and I don't use any VirtualDub filters.

What exactly does YUV do for us?

It's a difference colorspace, or way of storing color. The conversion between YUV and RBG isn't exact, so there's technically a slight bit of loss involved.

Actually, most of the loss will probably occure due to the fact that you are halving the color information for YUY2, rather than the actual conversion to YUV.

But that's also where the smaller filesize comes from, so it's your call.
