AMV Length (round 2)

Ok, perhaps I was not being specific enough in the Previous Topic so lets try again.

As far as AMV's being shown at a convention contests go, what do you think would be an ideal limit for the length an AMV should be?
4... 5....6 minutes?
Please keep in mind that there may only be 2 hours set aside to show these videos, and the longer they are, the fewer they can show.

This has nothing to do with how long you want to make your longest video, or how long your videos are.

Well the problem is I really can't say why I am asking. And posting 8 posts down being more specific about the question posed would be pointless as more people would read the first topic and simply reply to that.

All I can say is the feedback provided here will be used for something very important. People who know who I am will likely fuess what, thought I can not confirm or deny anything.

In this case I would say 6 or 7 minutes at the most. 7 is really pushing it. But if it is done right people willn't mind watching it. For the most part on average videos are around 4 minutes or so. 7 minutes would be my recommendation.

I agree with 7 minutes. Most videos aren't 7 minutes, and many that are 7 minutes or longer SHOULDN'T be...

6-7 minutes maximum is recommended because the longer a video is, the harder it will be to keep it interesting. I have seen videos that push upwards of 7 minutes that were very nicely done and I never got bored, and some badly done videos that I was bored before 30 seconds of it had played.

I don't think action videos work very well past 5 or 6 minutes. Comedy does not work well past about 4 minutes 99.9% of the time. Drama or in-depth character profiles seem to work best for the long videos. That's what I've observed thus far, at least.

6 or 7 minutes is about right. If it's a comedy video though this number shrinks because there is only so long you can keep a joke going before you run it dry. Drama videos typically hit this lenght a lot but audience's attention waver so you should only use 6 or 7 minutes if you think you have an idea that you won't be struggeling with down to the last few minutes. If you have a fresh idea most people will EASILY hold their attention for the 3-4 minute range but that is a bit short for the creator's purposes.

Five to Six minutes, that's it. Make individual exceptions for specific videos that are well made and flow and make six to seven or even eight minutes feel like less than five, but don't say 'seven minutes' from the outset or you'll end up with too many boring six and a half-seven minute videos that you can't disqualify.

Depends on how many submissions the contest recieves. I'd say 7 minutes with the possability for longer in individual cases to start with just to keep things from getting boring but once the contest is big enough to have to cut submissions the time allowed should be cut as well.

Well if you are making a video strickly on the length of the song used, then 5-6 minutes should be the max. Five minutes is already pushing it in terms of attention span (unless you really got something going).

But if you add in extra footage like an epilogue or prologue for either a dramatic or comedy type video, then anything under 7 minutes should be the limit. Again, I think the attention span of your audience is the major factor.

I know I can tolerate listening to songs that are 10 sometimes 20 minutes long, but watching a video along with that is just unbearable.
