having source footage and not knowing the anime?

Post by SpLiF_3d » Mon Sep 20, 2004 10:54 pm

:? well, i was reading the interview with hsien and dave and when i came across the section where they were talking about matching up anime and music...i was baffled when hsien mentioned that he had not seen the anime FLCL that he used to make such a great vid...my iron lung.

wtf? huh? :?

how do you get footage without seeing a series or at least an episode...but this confuses me to no end cuz i am trying to figure out how you would know what clips to use had you never seen a series.

granted that when creating amvs you more than likely taking clips out of context that it originally is in for the show but it sounds like picking clips out of a hat...unless you had to have watch all the shows and decided on specific clips to use....

well...thats my rantin and ravin on that little bit of madness in the back corner of my mind

can someone shed some light on this for me

When I made my first Naruto AMV, I had only seen the episode I put into it, 46 and 47, so I was fling blind for the most part. I know watching videos to anime I have not seen I miss out on many of the subtle, even not so subtle, newances creators put in. So when creating this way you just have to go with your gut, and general knowledge of the genre your working with.

(Note:I don't recommend this method of creator. My first Naruto video would have been at the very least much easier to edit had I had a greater knowledge of the series.)

I made my bomberman vid for RVG project without watching a single episode of bomberman all the way through. I made my Lupin/SmoothCriminal video with only having seen 10% of the footage that I used.

Its not that hard, you just load it into the timeline and look for crap that fits to the music :p
(this is not recommended as an actual editing method for beginners)

that's crazy....where do you get the footage....does someone just load up a folder full of random clips onto the comp and boom...your stuck with what you got....

...hmmm....the thought is still a little offsetting but i guess it is possible for genius to work under any circumstance...

to me...i wanna know what i'm gonna do with the song and plan what clips to extract from my dvds or else i'll be looking at almost everything a different way in which it would fit into the project....

i dunno...maybe i'm just picky....but it's something i'll have to try...see what happens :D :)

Heh, Copperas Cove, we're like neighbors or something.

Anyway, it's possible to make an AMV without watching a show quite easily. You listen to the song and say "Okay, I need someone getting punched in the face for that part." You scan through the show at 20x fast forward, and find someone getting punched...and then their head slams backward into a wall! Hey, that goes with the next beat! :)

However, I prefer watching a show through before trying to make an AMV from it. Usually I have the song in mind and I watch the show trough, looking for scenes to fit certain parts, and sometimes finding better scenes than those I'd originally planned on.

Abracadabra was done not knowing the footage. I bought the dvd out of the bargin bin box just to add to my collection. I read what the anime was about on the back of it..and when I decided on the song I loaded the footage up and started scanning through it.
In fact..sometimes it's easier to work with footage you don't know very well..then you're not angsting over "Am I making such and such char bring out such and such qualities when I do this or that."

VicBond's a big speed editor, I don't think he knew his footage for Nod Ya Head! or When Worlds Collide.

I've done blind edits twice, at the AB2004 Iron Chefs. Both times I used DVDs I'd bought that day in the dealers room of shows I'd never seen before (Texhnolyze and Azumanga Daioh). I just kinda speed-browsed through the disc (or episode) and found clips I thought would work. In the case of Texhnolyze I focused on the girl and grabbed any shots I could of her, and in the AD match I just went for weird shots, since it was a Bjork song...

It's easy. You just rip the DVDs you bought/rented/borrowed without watching them first.

For me, I got friends to rip the DVDs for me, so I really didn't have to watch it at all.

Although that kind of nulled the point because later I watched the whole thing in Premiere without sound... but that doesn't really count as watching it... Does it?!

I was bored. Gimme a break. I wanted to kno what footage was there! D:

Anyway, it was for my AWA Master's video(the one I never finished, apparently). An Eva video without an Eva in it.

Awesome stuff. Still not done yet... I stopped because I was too lazy to go rent EoE and rip it... Only had death and Rebirth...

I plan to do this with an azumanga daioh video I plan to make...

....nah, I really need to watch the show.

I did my akon 14 iron chef video without ever having seen FLCL.
