How do you remember something(AMV research)

Post by Pyle » Tue Sep 14, 2004 10:39 pm

In the AMV I'm currently working on there is periods of memories, in which they remember something from before. The thing is that I want it to feel exactly like a memory you've expereinced before.

When I remember a specific event, I usually can't remember the thing fully and instead get glimpses and flashes of it, and I'm wondering if that's the way everyone experiences memories.

Man this seems really out of place in this forum

When I remember events I usually remember snap shots at first of the scene (much like a photo) and then if I start the event from the begining I can remember the entire thing cronologically. I couldn't remember half as much if I were to just try to remember what happend at exactly 2pm during the day as apposed to sitting down and thinking how my entire day went from the moment I got up.

While it's not the way everyone experiences memories (ask a psychologist for details), it's the generally accepted mode of recall. Bits and snatches of images, with parts unclear (or only portions clear) is common. Well, at least this is the generally portrayel, and it's my understanding of how it works in general.

Personally, my memory is this mysterious thing that I ask questions of and it gives me answers, some of which make sense and some of which don't.

As far as memories in AMVs, you could always do that thing where the character rubs his chin while looking into the distance, then the screen can do that wavy thing, and then he remembers.

Seriously, for me it depends on the nature of the memory, good ones tend to fade in, the bad ones come in flashes.

My memory is... never ask me about my memory

It's basically very organized, and the way I remember things is sort of by narrowing down associations. Depending on what sort of memory I'm trying to call up, it can be crystal clear, or it can be hardly there. Most of the interesting information (and I'm interested in a lot of things) snaps into place and stays there (I get by completely without notes at school). Flashbacks to memorable events stay extremely clear, too, although there's an air of exhaggarated vividness sometimes.

Today, for instance, I was discussing an unrelated subject, and it brought me to a flashback of a near-death experience I had when I was younger. It was pretty clear, but I think the colours in my mind were a bit brighter than they actually were. (I nearly drowned when I was six. It's quite an experience to describe, but that would be going too far for this thread, probably  )
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

If you've seen the movie Minority Report... I believe it has the best display of visual thoughts that I have ever seen.

Interesting.

I forgot to ask how you would project those images onto the screen, or how you would expect me to.

Oh yeah, my own projection of visual memory would probably be, hmm...

1) Blurrier for objects at distance, very sharp for nearby objects. Sort of like short-sightedness (and I have perfectly normal eyes). I think blurriness is the more dominant 'effect' here though.

2) More luminous.

3) Colours are softer and more vivid. (mild blues and mild orange tones tend to come up in my memories a lot.

Does that make sense?

All my memories look like exact flashbacks that use cross-fades and greyscale filters.

>_>
