I have the dvds... those are the raw footage. If I need to re-edit I can recreate any of my videos just by ripping the dvds.

I rip all my DVD's to one folder so I can work on multiple projects using the same VOB files. I haven't made clips to edit with since I got a new computer... it's all done using scripts now.

When a project is done and ready for archiving, I make some really low-quality AVIs of the source and burn the whole project to a CD. (The LQ footage is included as a placemarker for the project files.) I also include a txt file detailing exactly how I ripped the DVD, so it'd be possible for me to import high-quality footage into the project file again.

I'm not sure why I do all this, epecially now since my old project files are not going to work with the new AMVapp. I guess I just like keeping track of what I do...

I keep a big Huufyuv copy of my video and I save the project files.

Theoreticly I could rip the DVDs, make the d2vs and open up a video from 2 year ago and it would all be rockin'.

Actually they will - there are some legacy modes that I have included but have not written up yet. There are versions of the old decomb and the old mpeg2dec.dll for old file compatibility... it just requires certain commands to use them instead.

Well, THAT's true! I guess it's just a matter of if I want to do all that work again...ripping and making clips. I do still save a "master" file of the completed video - I think these old ones are still MMJPEG compressed but it's still something.

That's the thing... I dont make clips. I just make one d2v project file per dvd and an equivalent avisynth script.

I've been saving everything back to my first vid (I work with clips, not AVS). Mostly because I can, and by using old hard drives, 20 and 40 GB'ers. Too small for system drives, but good for saving project directories that are about five GB each.

I also save the final renders as AVI files to DVD ROMs. And MPEG2 and MPEG1 versions to CDROMs. Sounds like a lot, but the media is cheap and worth a lot of convenience.

Is it worth having all the footage ? Maybe...I re-used the clips from my fourth project to make a completely new vid that won a contest award. When I recontructed my first video, I used most of the footage that I captured the first time around. And whenever I'm trying to fit anime to a new song, I'll go over the list of what I have already. If it fits, then I'm several hours ahead.

I do a final export to a single video file once I'm done editing. Component Video codec(have Quicktime on a Mac. Component Video is kinda big since no compression whatsoever, but nice quality). From the export I make the different versions for distribution, con submissions, etc. I always try to keep the final export, if for no reason than better compression may show up in a year or two, and I can get a better quality distribution made. Plus, I'm a packrat. Lots of clutter sitting on my computer, some from over a decade ago. I just archive it all.

Delete everything except the distribution version (towatch my own videos on occassion). I put so much effort in every video that I really don't want to go back even after some time. Plus, I always strive to be different with every video, therefore keeping project files is not necessary for me.
