This is certainly a very interesting discution. Personally I try to stay away from effects but I enjoy all types of videos.
Let me be concice:
I recently saw two videos both to Utena. One by MeriC, one by AD. They are both amazing videos. However, I belive I liked AD's a bit more because of his flawless use of effects to enhance the emotional impact and make the video fuller and more solid.
Not a argument, just something to think about. If you think I'm wrong check out the videos for yourself and we will see. (The Two Shall Meet and Liberation of Memories Past.)
A thought on pre-concieved AMV ideas...

God....i hate these 'impact" videos....and the videos with the non-stop flashing just to capture viewers attention
but effects can be used for good stuff it depends on
how you do them?
where do you do them?
why do you do them?
and the most important thing
syncing the effect to the music if an effect is not synced right
the video will just suck...
p.s.
old videos rock!
