AMVs: Hobby or 'way of life'?

Post by badmartialarts » Wed Aug 18, 2004 9:04 pm

bote wrote:Funny...everyone talks about AMV-ing as an hobby, how no one is taking it seriously etc. Yet again, people insist on buying the equipment, buying the DVD's, buying CD's, buying programs. Why on earth would I want to pay that much for something I'm not even serious with? Some expensive fun this AMV-ing thingy is. :)
I decided to split this away from it's originator thread as I figure it merits some dicussion.

Let's get some points out of the way.

a) YOU N()()B, THIS HAS BEEN DISCUSSED TO DEATH BLAH BLAH....

Yes, it probably has. In fact, I got 174 matches for "hobby" in General AMV threads alone on the Search. One topic which died only two days ago, in fact.

b) OF COURSE AMVs ARE A HOBBY YOU N()()B BLAH BLAH....

Yeah, I think so as well. But as what point do you say, "Man, I just bought a $3000 bundle of software and hardware for a 'hobby?'"

So, what are the feelings of the crowd? Is it a trifling matter to sit down and burn 20+ hours on a masterpiece of suckitude that'll barely get a nod from others? I think not. Yet, when I used to paint models, the equipment for that could go from newbie range to awfully expensive really fast as well. So, any hobby has its expenses. In fact, the costs tend to be justified, as they are labors of love. But has that love passed into obsession for some?
Life's short.

Compared to sky-diving, diving, surfing, sking, etc. AMVs are a downright cheap hobby. That's even assuming people actually pay for what they use and that's a questionable assumption for the majority of people.

I'd place it squarely in the realm of "hobby". Just like you'll find hardcore hobbyists in other areas, I'm sure there are people who feel that way about AMVs. But, nonetheless, it is still a hobby, in that being it's something that we do on our own time that we derive enjoyment from.

Well you have to understand that 99% of everyone doesn't spend 3000 on equipment. All the programs are readily avalible online to pirate. The real money goes to buying anime as theres no way you can download .vob files.

Its a hobby for me, but hobby is a very broad general term. This is a hobby but its also a legitimate form of art in my opinion. A really good video is something that people can watch forever.

Art is art is art.

I generally hate using the word "art" for amv's, cause it does sound a bit pretencious. But it's true. :P Art is Art.

Why does a painter paint? because he has the paint already or because he feels something inside he has to get out.
It can go either way.

:P Myself. I have something I wanna get out, so I use amv's instead of a shotgun and a clock tower.

(nod) This is certainly a hobby, and though I do invest money into it, what person doesn't invest money into a hobby at some point?

X2

I'd write something more but Godix pretty much summed it up.
