German speakers: I request translation assistance

Post by Scintilla » Tue Aug 10, 2004 12:33 am

I'm looking for a good translation of the first verse of Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus"... I get the gist of what he's saying from services like BabelFish, but the translations I get don't sound poetic at all (if they even manage to get all the words translated), and I certainly wouldn't want to put them in subtitles.

Anyway, the lyrics:
Er war ein Punker
Und er lebte in der grossen Stadt
Es war in Wien, war Vienna
Wo er alles tat
Er hatte Schulden, denn er trank
Doch ihn liebten alle Frauen
Und jede rief:
Come and rock me Amadeus

Er war Superstar
Er war populär
Er war so exaltiert
Because er hatte Flair
Er war ein Virtuose
War ein Rockidol
Und alles rief:
Come and rock me Amadeus
The second half is pretty straightforward, but I have no idea how to render the first half such that it sounds good.

Yeah, that looks pretty much like what I got from BabelFish, except that the last line was changed to "<i>skirt</i> ME Amadeus", which I found immensely more amusing even though it wasn't correct. :)

Awright, here we go, first verse, poetic translation:
He was a punker
Lived in the capital
It was Vienna
Where he did it all
He drank his rent dry
But all the girls still loved him
And everybody say:
Come and rock me Amadeus
This, as shown by machine translations below, is so non-literal that it almost makes me sick. But unlike Rammstein's English version of "Du Hast" (another in the almost-a-different-song caption), there isn't really a way to do this more accurately and still have it sound like anything. That fifth line is the real killer, and I could probably do something better if I had an idea of the rhythms involved.
