I'm afraid that when they start touring here, the media will be referring to them as "Europe's Evanescence" or "The Next Lacuna Coil" or some shit like that. As far as I know, NIGHTWISH are The Premiere Symphony Goth Metal Band (or whatever label you want to use). I know of a few obscure bands with a similar sound/style but I think NW were the first, if not ONE of The First, to meld Operatic, Symphonic Goth music and Metal. - with a female lead to boot.

As far as I know, they are DEFINITELY the first to incorperate true operatic vocals into metal.

I'm a seventeen year old Metal Head, my cd collection includes: Iced Earth, Penumbra, Steel Prophet, Evergrey, Iron Maiden, Cradle Of Filth, Hammerfall, Dragon Force, Lacuna Coil, Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Darkwell, and Nightwish. As far as I'm concerened, Nightwish is one of the best things to happen in Metal since early Iron Maiden. Nightwish is definetely more heavier than Evanesense. And Tarja's Angelic voice sounds much more emotional and mature than Eva as well. Eva is good, but comparing the two, Nightwish most definetely comes out on top. The best thing about the band, is that they have not yet gone "Commercial". Meaning, they still have their own unique style. My personal favourite of their albums is "Angel's Falll First". My favourite songs are:

Elven Path
Beuty And The Beast
Astral Romance
Moondance
Bless The Child
The Carpenter
Slaying The Dreamer
Over The Hills And Far Away
Tenth Mand Down

Nightwish has a very bright future ahead of them, and I can't wait to see and hear what they come out with next.

I wrote the following out on October 25th, 2003 in the Blind Guardian forum reguarding Nightwish and their 'own unique style'...
nailz wrote:Ok, I was thinking about it a little when I switched CDs from Angels Fall First to Wishmaster and back to Oceanborn ... Nightwish is Struggling to find some kind of consistancy in their music. I get this distinct feeling that this band, after 4 albums, still doesn't know the direction it wants to take with their music. I think Century Child illiustrates the point beyond any doubt.

You could go off and say that they're 'Evolving' or 'Progressing' like Blind Guardian, but I don't truely believe that. Nightwish has never been consistant with their music. They seem to have yet to form an Identitiy for themselves like Blind Guardian did. Going from Nightfall to ANATO may seem like a Huge Identity rift to some, but if you look beyond that, NiME was a natural progression from IFTOS and SFB etc.

My feeling is most bands round themselves out before moving on to something more extravagant, and do so only by defining their sound overall. Nightwish has yet to do that. Their albums are so veried and different that you can't really Judge the band on one album alone, maybe not even 2 albums. While the incredible Diversity allows the band obviously more fans than that of a consistantly sound band, it also severely limits the creativity I truely believe Tuomas is capable of, and the uncertianty of what the next album will sound keeps me uncomftorably offguard.
Since then, however, after hearing Once, I have mentioned several times that it does indeed sound like Nightwish has finally captured an Identity for their music. They seemed to decide on blending metal and techno influences with a symphony sound. While defintely moving toward a more 'radio friendly' sound, I think this is coicidental to Tuomas's vision of what the band should sound like. I think Once is the best album they've put out, surpassing even Oceanborn. Now they can truely get better.
