Help playing AMV's on a Mac- "codec not available"

Post by mughi » Fri Jul 23, 2004 5:59 pm

I searched and didn't find a thread or post about this problem, so...

2 questions:

1. Are there any tricks for getting a Macintosh G4 to play AMVs encoded with dvix and other more esoteric PC codecs. I simply get a "can't play due to missing codec- Codec not available on QuickTime server"

2. How do I get rid of AMV's in my star ratings list that I have downloaded but not been able to view because of the above referenced issue, so that it doesn't max out at 10 and lock my download capability?

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

Well ... there's two common 3rd party player solutions:

MPlayer OSX: http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/
and
VLC: http://www.videolan.org

You could also install the DivX codec at the URL that Zarxrax provided. That would work, too.
Yeah ... I use a Mac ... it works and I like it.

Make sure you have a fairly recent version of Quicktime(preferably 6.5). As Zarxrax said, install DivX, then download XViD Delegate: http://www.insaneness.com/xvid.html. Pretty simple.

With those installed, Quicktime Player should now be able to play about every AMV you throw at it aside from RealPlayer(.rm) and Windows Media(.wmv).

Won't 3ivx work as well?

Yes. 3ivx ( www.3ivx.com ) would work, too, or FFusion ( http://aldorandenet.free.fr/codecs/ ). However, I think you would also need DivX JUST to load the AVI file before any FourCC codes are being read ... some AVI files are weird like that for some reason ...

Depends on how many videos you have downloaded from the doughnut. If you only have a few you can always give them all 3's and then go back and chage them once you've seen them, but if you have hundreads of star ratings you're never going to bother.

On second thought you should probably just deal with you codec problems, it shouldn't take long. One thing that helped me was getting the full codec needed for encoding not just the playback one.
