Good for Bandai
I tend not to like piracy as I find it artistically offensive. However it can arise as a by product of an in balance in economies. I saw a thing where a dictator outlawed satellite tv and yet you could still see a bunch of dishes on top of houses if you looked from a high point.
Anyway I could see why people buy them as somethings are difficult to find or are not translated.
Of course you get what you pay for as Trident said about Descaflowne. Wonder if he actually saw that somewhere.
Heartbreaker had a good point. Some of these watered down lame translations are making me want to learn Japanese and order originals. I hate censorship.
I dunno I've never seen a bootleg anime. Of course I don't mind subtitles over a bad dub.
I hope they don't go after fansubs. Then people will be at the mercy of the tiny section in rental stores to see anime before purchasing it.
Besides with fansubs its not the same. At the fast pace of anime sometimes watching subtitles and the on screen action takes away from the show. They still give you an idea of what to buy, which is the idea. With something like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon subs are okay because it is theatrical and paced. I image subs on something like Excel Saga or Ranma could damage the experience.
I can't blame Bandai for it. Besides the more massed produced copies that are made the cheaper manufacturing becomes. That means more anime and lower prices. Piracy cuts in on that.

It sounds like they're just going off of those who make money off the bootlegs and/or try to pass off their goods as real and official.
So I don't see any reason for AMV creators or free fansubbers (at least the ones that stop distribution when an anime gets licensed in the U.S.) to be worried about it. On the other hand, it is a good thing for anime consumers since they're going after people who may try to rip us off.

Everybody has bootlegs. I ordered the GTO set off of Amazon.com marketplace and got the bootleg version. On top of that, not all of the bootlegs come out of HK, so sometimes it can be hard to tell (for example there are a lot of box sets for sailor moon that seem to have Canada as the origin point).coffee54 wrote:I just recently discovered that one of my favorite places to pick up anime was dishing out bootlegs. It's kinda like being betrayed, though looking back it was fairly obvious and I should have known better. Even so I wish Bandi the best of luck.
What gets me, is the general low quality of the bootlegs. Compared to the fansubs, even official releases can frequently fall short.
