hi. I'm a total n00b here, but i was wondering how I could get text to play over video. I tried creating titles and then using transparencies, but I couldn't get rid of the white background the text had, so it kind of drowned out the video in the background.
Basically I want text to fade in and fade out over video with transistions going on. Is this possible in just premiere? or do i need to use after effects? can someone help?

here are a variety of ways to do it.
A) creating the text layer with a color background (like making a blue screen) and write your text on that layer. key out the background color using a transparency tool.
B) using photoshop import it with the alpha. and then create the tranparency to have the text show around/through
C) purchase a roll of clear tape, a White out pen and an array of colored markers. put tape on the screen when and where you want text and then write the text inside the tape. (you may color them with the markers)

White text on a black background is ideal. I just make a .bmp image with that and put it where I want over my video on track 2. Then select transparency settings and key out the black by selecting "RGB Difference" and using the eyedropped for the black background of your text.

I've never had any problems at all with Title Editor in Premiere Pro(we're getting pretty cozy, ol' Title Editor and I....I'm using it to do a lot of my graphics effects in my current project).
But, to create a title without this lil' tool, I'd just do as DrngdKreationz mentioned, and use Photoshop (or the GIMP, which is free but kind of clunky in it's Windows incarnation) to make a transparent TIFF or other graphics file with your text typed out onto that. Then, put that as an overlay into your editor....if you're using an editor that allows overlays, that is. If not, then it's gonna be a little more complicated.
First, you'll have to take every frame of footage out that you want title over. Then, you have to load them all up into your favorite picture editor, put the text on top (if you want the text to fade in and out, you're gonna have to make it fade in and out frame-by-frame, which is a bit tricky, but as long as you remember that ~24 frame=one sec for progressive footage, you should be okay. So, if you want the fade ins and outs to be at 160 bpm to match yer techno-beats, you'd take 160/60, or two and two thirds beat per second, divided into 24....to get 9 frames in between beats for your fade to happen. Yay math.)
Complicated? Yeah.......

Umm, you do realize you can make the text in an alpha layer in photoshop and import just the alpha layer to Premiere right? That way you can control transparency, length, etc. the same as you would any other clip in Premiere. The titler is still easier, I'll grant you that, but using a picture editing program doesn't have to quite as complex as you've made it. I haven't heard of anyone doing something this complex when there's much easier ways since, umm... well, Euphoria I guess.Sousaphonist wrote:First, you'll have to take every frame of footage out that you want title over. There is a window that has the tittle Effects Control. Once you have selected a clip, click on transparancy. You can then follow the directions of every other post in this topic.Dan-E wrote:^ that's the problem. I can't get white text on black background. I don't know how to get blackground.
There is none.Dan-E wrote:sorry for the double post, but i can't find the edit button.

From reading his post, it sounded like he was using Windows Movie Maker, not Premiere. So, I gave a guesstimated way of doing it in WMM. Sorry for the complexity.
