Nu metal, too broad?

Post by billy_wires » Mon Jun 28, 2004 2:59 am

I was thinking, the Nu metal catagory is far too broad, methinks. Let's take into account three nu metal bands:

System of a Down,
Linkin Park,
Korn.

System of a Down likes to sing about political junk and rediculous crap (hey, I still like them). Linkin Park sings about emotional things and so does Korn, to a certain extent. System of a Down is apart by lyrics alone. Then we have the sound itself. Korn is by far the heaviest (If you argue that, you've never heard all three). So Korn and Linkin Park are similar in lyrics (although Korn's lyrics are more angsty than Linkin Park) but not in sound, and System of a Down is off in left field. Hell, I'm not even sure if all those are nu metal. Metal already has 923874125897 different catagories, why not add some more?

Well, there's a few other bands I toss into nu-metal.

Rage Against the Machine - like System of a Down, but even more political, and heavier

Sevendust - in between Korn and Linkin Park (harder than LP, lyrics not as angry as Korn)

Limp Bizkit - somewhere between Linkin Park and System of a Down, I'd say.

Thus, you get a closed loop. Starting from Linkin Park, you get

Linkin Park - Sevendust - Korn - RATM - SOAD - Limp Bizkit - Linkin Park

Hrm. Maybe I'll stop posting at 3:36 am

Those that are into Nu Metal check out Fear Factories last albums, thats when they got a bit soft like System and Slipknot seem to have done.

Oh how convenient. A theory about God that doesn't require looking through a telescope.

What do you mean by tryna act ruff? I'm not sure I quite understand.
I'm bored and you're dumb. A match made in heaven.

I think he means Trying to Act tough.

On Rage: hey its cool to voice your opinion on the government but man. If I was that Angry at EVERYTHING then I would rather shoot myself.

System: you just gotta love them.

LP: He's got to be the whiniest of all the nu-metal artists in the land

LB: Almost as whiny as LP, Dude your girlfriend left you.. Get over it.

Slipknot: It was cool the first time around when they just thought everything sucked. but now they take themselves a little too seriously. But

Korn: I just think they were cooler when they were a bunch of losers. complaining about how popular people suck. now they don't have that same "rawness" to them

I love nu-metal

Don't forget to add bands like Trust company into the mix as well.

Yes, some of their songs did get a little soft, but they always come right back with a thrashing, very fast headbanging song. For instance, Bite the Hand That Bleeds and Undercurrents, followed by 2 heavy songs Default Judgement and Bonescraper.

I still wouldn't consider Fear Factory "nu metal" under any circumstances though... I'd call it more of a heavy metal/thrashy sound
