AnimeNext 2004 AMV Contest Results

Post by VegettoEX » Sun Jun 20, 2004 1:25 pm

We're back. Had fun. Contest went over amazingly. I'm still collecting my thoughts (not to mention my computer is still sitting out in the car), so for now, I'm just going to post the four main winners from each category (Action, Drama, Comedy, Judge's Award). I will post the full list of entrants later on this evening.

I'm going to kindly ask that other attendees refrain from posting a complete list, themselves. I'd like to personally take care of it, since I have a variety of extra information that I'd like to include with the list (vote percentages, etc).

WINNER: ACTION
Title: "Gentrification"
Editor: David McKeen (Dark Side Productions)
Artist: Powerman 5000
Song: "When Worlds Collide"
Footage: Naruto

WINNER: DRAMA
Title: "The Navigator and the Swordsman"
Editor: Ginny Sheehan (Seta Ginny Studios)
Artist: Evanescence
Song: "My Immortal (Rock Version)"
Footage: One Piece

WINNER: COMEDY
Title: "Alternate Eva Opening: Eva Bebop"
Editor: Peter J. Tom-Wolverton (Scintilla)
Artist: Yoko Kanno & The Seatbelts
Song: "Tank!"
Footage: Neon Genesis Evangelion

WINNER: JUDGE'S AWARD
Title: "Soledad"
Editor: Khanh Bui (Bui Brothers Studios)
Artist: Westlife
Song: "Soledad"
Footage: [various video games]

Look for a much more detailed post later. Complete listing of all 25 videos, three (non-competing) trailers, vote percentage breakdown, honorable mentions, etc.

I really wish I could've been there to see it, but I'm glad to hear that all went well and that the contest was a success. Congratulations to all the winners and I can't wait to see some of these ^_^ Are you going to be sending out e-mails about possibly receiving a copy of the contest?

Congrats to all the winners and the rest of the finalists! It was a good contest and I've been told there were some VERY close votes (as I'm sure VegettoEX will prove in his next post), and there were lots of cool videos I wasn't expecting. Once again, thanks to Mike & Meri for running a smooth contest, and I can't wait to see next year's entries...

Yooooosh~. Here we go with the full information on the contest.

The contest was played four times throughout the entire convention (Friday 12:00 pm, Friday 6:30 pm, Saturday 2:00 pm, Sunday 3:00 pm; the first two showings were SLIGHTLY delayed, but hopefully nothing too ridiculous). Ballots were due Saturday by 5:00 pm. We had a total of twenty five videos in the contest, with three non-competing trailers/commercials starting off the tape (to get the audience in the mood, to make sure the volume levels were appropriate, etc). The videos were separated into three categories: Action, Drama, and Comedy (eight, twelve, and five videos, respectively). At the end of the contest, a recap was played, which was basically a slide-show collection of all of the title cards and a uniquely identifying screen shot from the video, one after another (put to hellogoodbye's "<I>Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn</I>"). Each attendee could pick their single favorite video in each of the three categories; this would decide the three popular vote winners. After the ballots were counted, the judges (myself and Meri) selected one other video that we felt set itself apart from the other videos in some kind of way (with both technical and artistic merits).

All four winning videos were played during the awards ceremony, which took place Saturday evening during the judges' deliberation for the cosplay awards. The winners all received printed and signed certificates, as well as a VHS copy of the contest tape. Luckily, three of our four winners were there!

I estimated 400-500 people saw the contest during the Friday evening main showing, with at least 200 seeing it both Friday and Saturday afternoons. Another 500 people saw the award winning videos during the ceremony. These are EXTREMELY rough estimates, so don't hold me to my word on them.

So here's the full list of videos!

So now let's get to the winners and runner-ups. I mentioned the winners in the first post, but here's a more detailed list. And yes, both Action and Drama were indeed REALLY that close ^^;;.

<I>HONORABLE MENTION</I>: "<A HREF="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 05">Orange Five-O</A>" (22% of category votes)

<B>DRAMA:</B>
<I>WINNER</I>: "The Navigator and the Swordsman" (18% category votes)
<I>HONORABLE MENTION</I>: "<A HREF="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 3">Essence of the Heart</A>" (17% of category votes)

<B>COMEDY</B>:
<I>WINNER</I>: "<A HREF="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... >Alternate Eva Opening: Eva Bebop</A>" (55% of category votes)
<I>HONORABLE MENTION</I>: "<A HREF="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 146">Which Kenshin Boy is Gay?</A>" (29% of category votes)

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

So there we go! I think that's pretty much everything I can think of. If any of you four want to take a picture of your certificates to show off, that'd be cool (actually, I need to mail Khanh Bui the certificate and contest copy, since they were the only winner not actually at the con).

If you have any further comments, questions, or suggestions about the contest, feel free to let me know. I think it turned out absolutely outstanding.

I need a good night's sleep.

Yeah, I was close but they did enjoy your video. People were laughing as well. It was a good crossover comedy/action video. Good work Vlad.

Fun was had by all... except for that left speaker ^_^'

Post by Hobo Joe » Mon Jun 21, 2004 12:54 pm

I was there for the 6:30 Friday screening, and except for the far left speaker going out somewhere in there, it went pretty well (it was my first convention/contest, too ^_^) The 6:30 was about 40 minutes late, but they got started right up, which I found to be good.

Also, I felt a very distinct sinking feeling when I saw that Vlad had a video in there... ^_^' I heard a lot of people saying that it belonged more in the comedy section than action, but I didn't mind so much.

The winners very much deserved it, too ^_^ Maybe I'll give the contest another shot and another video next year. We'll see, and congratulations to the winners.

Still in shock

Post by GinnySeta » Mon Jun 21, 2004 4:21 pm

Wow....I'm still in shock from the results. The Navigator and the Swordsman was my first entry ever in a contest o.o I'm glad people liked it.

Oh...eh heh, hey, I'm very new around here. I just recently added my first video...and hopefully soon I'll get it uploaded.

*cracks whip* Upload faster! To be honest I wasn't that optimistic about your video when I saw it on the ballot, but I was pleasantly surprised. It progressed really well, and yours is definately one of the better One Piece vids I've seen.

Can't wait till you upload it!

Well... It's more of a Parody Action video and dosn't quite fit into Comedy... Tough choice,,
