duh. some explanation:
When FMP was written, there were 2 kinds of storylines. The one kind was taking place abaut sagara being an asshole and idiot at school, messing up Chitory´s life. The second kind was converted to the series, the storylines abaut Gauln, Sagara, the Mechas etc.... You can see some intermezzos of these funny storys due FMP, but they were mostly left out of the anime (while they were still IN the manga)
So, after FMP was produced they thought it would be a shame to leave all these funny storys out, so they decided to set them up as a special after the main plot. You can see the connections of FMP and FMP:FMF in some episodes (the beatch, some school scenes, etc) and clearly recognize the fact that they originally happend at the same time.
