Wat r things that might go wrong at a competition?

Post by conspheretrix » Sat Jun 12, 2004 11:25 pm

I've never actually been to a competition, but I got a lot better at amvs and I'm hoping to enter one soon. Is there anything I should watch out for? I know I should follow the rules, but theres always other things I should do. Can u guys help me out?
My best amv: <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... 68065">The Will To Live</a> - Won third place for Serious/Sentimental in a <a href="http://www.freewebs.com/neko_studios/">Neko Studios Contest</a>

Aside from follow the rules, no, there isn't anything else you can do. Everything else is in the hands of the contest coordinator and the tech staff. THEY, as people who have attended multiple cons will tell you, can have things fuck up in an infinite number of ways. The video equipment can malfunction, the codec can break, the ballots can be mislabeled, the judges can be confused, etc.

As far as what you should watch for as a contestant, don't get too stressed out over whether you win/lose or whatever. It's just an AMV contest, nothing more, nothing less. You get your little ego boost by seeing your video on the giant screen (and maybe getting a big round of cheers from the audience), but the world isn't going to end based on whether or not you take home a trophy.

One thing I never thought about until I ran into the problem, projectors have different contrast ratios than computer montiors. It's probably a good idea to not use too much stuff like 30% transparent overlays, feathered circles, or other effects that require a pretty good contrast ratio to make out. Not that I see people do that type of thing in AMVs all that often but speaking as someone who did an entire video of that sort of thing I gotta say you'll wince when you see what it looks like when run through a projector.

The only other suggestion I have is that if you get cut then don't take it personally. Similarly, if you don't win an award don't take it personally. There's always next year, just sit back and enjoy the con regardless.

I've had CPU fans fail and system partitions disappear. And that's only the half of it.

Like dookol said don't stress over it. It is just a fun competition. I mean I sent in my 2nd amv I ever made to a contest last Otakon and well eventhough there was no shot at it getting into the contest it was fun watching it at the overflow screenings. People are still going to watch it no matter what. And also it is just a big thrill seeing one of your works up on the big screen. Knowing you created it. Then the response you get back makes you feel good. Hey if you are going to Otakon meet up with me and some of the other creators at the AMV pannel. Just have fun and put your heart and soul into making your video. The videos that come from you and tells a good story are the best ones in my opinion.

I consider even if I get into the finals. I count myself lucky. For if you get into the finals your competing with the best of the best. Even that says alot about you as a editor. But do it for the fun of it. Experience and more competitions will come.
