There have been several threads in the past about editor age, if you want to search for them. Surprisingly, at least then I believe the average age was in the mid-20's. There are more of us (I'm 29, for example, and started making AMVs when I was around 21) older editors than you might think. And there will, or course, only get to be more 'older' editors as time goes by.

I made my first AMV at 13, way before I even knew the org existed. Boy oh boy was it terrible. I dicovered the org at age 16 and was still pretty bad (mostly making random action LBZ vids, although my syncing had improved). At around 17 I started getting more decent, and now I'm 18 and am probably better at editing then I ever have been.
I honestly think age does matter a little bit, but that statement doesn't apply to all situations. There can be editing prodigies, I just think it's rare these days. Older editors generally take it more seriously then younger editors AND have the patience to sit down and read/understand the guides. Most 12-15 year olds I know would simply look at them for about 30 seconds and be like "whatever".

The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

I guess I'll chime in since I'm one of the "older folks" (well not like that really old fogie Vlad
).
I started when I was 22 at the tail-end of my senior year in college. I'm now a quarter of a century minus one (24 for all those with mathphobia
).
As others have said, I don't think age dictates anything in terms of what you can do and quality. It's a matter of how much effort you're willing to put in and I hate to say this...natural creativity/imagination/etc.
As for being a "hardened anime fan," that's an understatement for me. I usually like maybe...1 out of every 10 shows I see. Then again, I've technically been watching anime since I was 8 years old (Dragonball Z in Korea when it ORIGINALLY aired and Macross/Robotech), but didn't get that heavily into it till HS/college. I watched a ton then and like anything, after awhile, it takes more to impress.
I think a large % of that also has to do with seeing such great shows near the beginning of college (i.e. Escaflowne, Kenshin, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, etc.) and not seeing much crap then. I think this in turn jaded me and gave me high expectations (which I still have). Like I said, it takes a lot to impress me lately and a part of me doesn't enjoy that. I kind of wish I could get excited about anime like I used to :-/.
Like most things, 95% of anime is crap. That's the truth. There's a reason we don't get EVERY anime released in Japan and only a small %. Because most of it is bad and why would a company license a bad show? (this obviously can be debated) Also well...let's be honest, there are tons of fanboys out there who just think anything anime is good -_-;;
Anyway, I'm ranting so I should stop >_>.
