Labeling songs, performed by different bands

Post by rubyeye » Sun May 02, 2004 11:32 pm

When identifying songs for convention submissions or entry into the org's server, which is the more appropriate way to identify songs originally written by one band, but is performed by another? Like if I were to use a song off one of those "tribute" albums but each song is done by a different artist.

Do you list the original band which wrote it, and say performed by ....

If I made a video that used the song "Come Together" by Aerosmith, would I submit the artist information as that, or would I have to include the fact that it was originally written and performed by The Beatles? Or any cover, for that matter, like Come On Eileen (Dexy's Midnight Runners/Save Ferris) or Take On Me ([omfg!!1!] a-ha/Reel Big Fish/etc.)?

[title of the song] - [name of performer]

I think that's all that's necessary. You can give credit to the original artist/writer of the song in the video description. What matters, as far as the video goes, is who performs whatever version of whatever song is in the video.
