Is it just me or was that the point of the original American Idol? Besides the massive multi-ton wads of cash that is.

Anyway I think it sounds like a good idea. Just diferent enough to distinguish it from most other general AMV contests. It sounds like a pretty big undertaking and the live thing never really worked too well in th Iorn Chef but a variation might be interesting. Maybe a live chat between the judges as they confer with each other about the vids.
The main problem as I see it is that the beginers only will attract a lot of people looking to compete on thier own level (like me for instance) but the twist of having to be able to do any kind of AMV will discorage people. Any creator can take a stab at a story vid, that just takes artistic tallent. Effect driven AMV's however take a lot more knowledge and, ironically, experience. Both ideas seem good but I don't know how well they will fit together.

There will have to be some sort of comparison though, or else it would be like judging a romance vid versus an action vid, not enough points of comparison between diferent styles.

I don't think a huge prize would be nessicary. Having ten qualifiers is a pretty good motivator as that gives better chances than most contests and it's an already made video.

One week is pretty short for a full length non-Iron-Chef video though. You might want to give the finalists a bit more time.

ah finally some debate and ideas. I see your point on the 2 ideas conflicting. Perhaps we should have seperate entry levels. or maybe a seperate contest for the exprienced and the inexperienced. (just throwig ideas out there)

I also see the point of the 1 week thing, I was just basing it off of american idol. However, considering we would be dropping people from the contest one at a time Ala american idol style (probably 2 at a time at first, not sure everyone wants to make 12 videos for 1 contest) it would take quite a while if we aloted a month for each one. I'm thinking only the final 2 that compete actually make a "Serious" vid project, and the previous ones are as good as they can get it within a week span. Using that idea, probably should be simple rules, like limiting what techniques, software, or effects could be used. on each, and the final 2 contestants go all out on it.

let me know what you guys think.

Since this is going to be like American Idol, is that mean the judges can be brutal?

I actually had an idea very similar to this a while back. I was originally going to run the AMV events for a new convention in Houston that's starting in 2005 (remaining nameless for the sake of covering my bases and whatnot, and I have since decided against running these events due to time/location constraints). We were gonna have a huge ballroom dedicated to AMV events for 2 days for 8 hours each day, and I was planning on having a big Iron Chef event on the first night. I wanted to have some kind of fun game show type dealie going on while the IC'ers were editing. So I thought about doing an "AMV Idol". Basically, long beforehand, I was going to post up the submission rules for the main contest, and also talk about a special AMV Idol contest. I was going to let the first 8 people that signed up and KNEW they were going to be AT the con participate. Here's how it would've gone down.

The 8 contestants each make their own original video. There are no constraints on the source/theme/song/etc. Just, whatever they want to create (somewhat like how on American Idol, they choose whatever they want to sing). Something to show off their editing talent and really wow the audience. We'd bring each editor on stage 1 by 1, and play the video in front of our Idol panel. Of course we'd have our variety of judges from the really nice, to the kind of on-the-fence guy, to the super-critical prick. After the 8 videos are played and critiqued, the audience would write in their votes on tally sheets (kind of like the phone-in voting for American Idol). Another idea I had that would kind of affect the voting, would be where each judge could pick one video that they simply hated, and could eliminate that person. However, that's a tad too mean-spirited for such a light hearted and fun event. Anyways, the votes would be tallied up, and the winner would be announced alongside the winner of that night's Iron Chef, and each winner would get a prize of some kind :)

So yeah, I like the idea. However, I'd rather it be a con event. Adds a lot more to the fun of it all. So, that's my two cents!

If you can be brutal like him
Now we just need a paula and a randy... (know anyone that can't finish a sentence without "dawg" somewhere in it?)

Yea I see your point on the con environment. It would be much more fun with live audience. But I don't see any cons taking this idea up for the same reasons you didn't go with yours. probably just takes too much time to dedicate such a large time slot to such an event. Not to mention I am no Con coordinator, nor do I know any. I think it could still be fun online, if we execute it right, even if not quite as fun as in a con setting. And then if its successful maybe some cons will take up the idea. who knows :D

Well, no the reason I'm not doing it with mine, is that I'm not running that con's events at all. If I were, then yeah I'd definitely do it.

I could see AWA easily doing something like this.
