I've been using the same k6-2 to edit for 2 years, and granted it's slow as hell. It did the job and never really crashed.

In the like 6 or 7 years I've had this computer I've only lost 1 harddrive, had no major virus' and everythings been pretty good.

Though dont get me wrong, I cant wait to move off this thing ><.

It sounds like the figurative war between Idea and Motivation, with Inspiration as the "agent provacateur".

As with my other arena of creative endeavor (I was a pulp author before I got into AMV's), I may have had the ideas, and I may have tried to sit down to write them...but nothing would really get done right--or even done at all--unless I was inspired. Or, to use the urban vernacular, I was "feelin' it".

It isn't necessarily that you're scared it won't turn out right. It's just that the idea and inspiration doesn't have that third element to get it going. The two sides do not have the "agent provocateur". Maybe to put it another way...your freak-dancers have no slow-jams to grind to! :D

Okay, that was bad...

But ya know what I mean.

Not necessarily true. Remember the whole concept behind AMV's is to create a synergistic collaboration between music and video. It is possible to simply use a formulaic process to create that. IE: simply matching lyrics to like minded video, for example you could use almost any powerful love song to Ai Yori Aoshi, and as long as you didn't get sloppy with your edits you'd have something that works. Likewise you can use almost any decent fight song to DBZ and your chances of it working are pretty good (ignoring that others have done the same thing, and judging a video on it's own merit).

You could, and it has in fact been argued that AMV's are merely fitting the peices of a jigsaw puzzle together. I disagree, personally I think that the key ingredient to an AMV is effort. Even a cookie cutter amv can be quite good and watchable if someone puts real effort into making it. Look at the videos in your 'saved' directory, I'll bet you that a good number of those follow a standard formula.

What I like is to see when people take that and turn it on it's head. For example editors that don't use the main rythm track in a song and use the underlying melody, or who take an anime and completely move it beyond the original content.

So to return to the original thread topic, I agree, having an idea can be daunting in the face of all that. I usually have at least one 'big' project that I work on little by little (damm Inuyasha.. anime noses are so hard to make in a 3d app) and a couple of small er 'fun' projects that I make and usually throw away since they either have 'test' ideas, in them or suck. My hope is that by doing this I get an associative plus on my main ideas.

What sucks is actually plotting stuff out. 400+ keyframed animatic sequences... cloth simulations, multiple camera angles with matching texture patterns for each one, lighting, mattes, overlays, hundred upon hundreds of frames to be photoshopped... craploads of episodes to rip for sometimes 10 seconds of footage. All this fueled by pizza and an unlimited supply of Jolt cola.

Oh, I use both Ad-Aware, Spybot, and I have AVG run scans on my computer on a nightly basis.

Ahh. I see. Less porn sites then.

Amen to that. I used to run IE and outlook express, and I would have to run Spybot to clean out my system every week or so. I mean I'm not some dumb user who just clicks yes when it pops up shit to install the spyware... it just has ways of getting through.
Since changing to Firefox and Thunderbird a few months ago, Spybot hasn't detected ONE SINGLE THING.

Getting back onto the main topic, I say try to make the video anyway, and just keep watching and re-working it until you're satisfied (or tired) of it.

It's really hard when you've done a bunch of film-theory stuff, and you can't help but pick apart everything you're trying to create...but I guess it's helped me avoid making a crappy video so far.

Especially since I haven't finished one yet. :?
Another pointless post!
