Keeping With It

Post by Tuplica » Thu Apr 15, 2004 12:01 am

Hey!

I'm working on a video for a con (hush hush other than that, I'm so paranoid... :roll: ) and it's turning out to be a lot longer process than any other vid I've worked on. I'm used to only spending a week or two on a video with short chunks of time dedicated to it- this is being done in 6 hour+ periods of time for a loooong time (whenever I can until the due date).

I was kind of hoping that if anyone else who has been in these circumstances had some advice for sticking with it instead of just giving up or getting bored and procrastinating until it's too late. It's really hard for me to keep going even though I've got more than half the vid finished.. it's just so exhausting. @_@;

Thanks!

Just keep with it. If it gets to the point where you hate working on it so bad that you dont care if you even make the deadline, then by all means don't push yourself. A silly contest is nothing to get depressed and exhausted over. If you can bear it though, just try to set aside time to work on it, and then make yourself do it. Turn off any distractions. If it gets too exhausting, take a short break and come back later, or even stop for the rest of the day, whatever.
Also before you start on something that you think will take a lot of time to do, consider how you will feel while working on it. I would probably wanna kill myself if I ended up spending more than 60 hours or so working on some slow drama vid... although I do enjoy those occasionally. However I can work on "fun" vids no problem. I've currently got about 100 hours logged onto a video and I'm loving every minute of it, because I'm doing such fun stuff with it.

Break it into chunks. I've had videos where I has to say 'today I will get between X and Y point finished' and ignore the fact that X and Y point are only 5 seconds out of a three minute video. This way I felt a sense of accomplishment that I met whatever goal I set out instead of despair than after 20 hous I only have thirty seconds of the video done. After doing that enough I eventually completed it.

OTOH once I completed it I tried to watch it objectively, thought it sucked and deleted it. Perhaps I was being overly harsh but I thought it was obvious that I didn't enjoy the video and forced my way through it. I figured if I as the creator barely enjoy it then how can I expect my audience to?

Wanna hear a funny story? No? Good. I worked on an esca vid for a year. Then my HD crapped out on me. Guess where my esca vid went.

A. To heaven
B. To Texas
C. Down the crapper

My point, I work on my vids for about anywhere from 5 mins to 6 hours a day getting next to nothing done. But I NEVER give up. The only time I ever burn out is when my progress gets destroyed and I need to start over. So keep all your important files on a secondary HD. If you're getting frustrated with a vid your working on, (which it sounds like you are) it's even more important to back your stuff up. If you're frustrated it's even more likely you take a break from that vid and something craps out on your comp and you need a format or something and suddenly realize that damned vid you worked so hard on and put yourself through so much pain for is gone. You can get frustrated and walk away a million times but as long as the project file is still there you can start back up anytime you want to.

As far as making deadlines are concerned I don't know. If I had a deadline for a vid and I didn't have much time you've got a judgement call to make. You can work at it and if you arent going to make it in time just forget about the con, or you could half ass it and make sure to get it in.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

Thanks for the support, guys. It really did change things for me... I just didn't reply at the time because I was so busy working on the video.

I stayed up for 36 hours Friday-Saturday to get it complete, and popped it in the mail on the date of the deadline. Fwew! I'm never doing that again! :P

Thanks !
