Last I checked, you had to run the subs and the video through VobSub and then re-encode. In fact, I've done this before in GraphEdit in order to make subbed VCDs.

You don't have to reencode ogm, just direct stream copy it to AVI. You'll loose sound (if it's vorbis) and subs, but you'll have an avi file.

If you want to open ogm in other programs you can try via avisynth - directshowsource() works fine. It should also open subtitles, because it's using all directshow filters.

You can also export subtitles with vdubmod - go to streams->stream list, select subs you want and click "demux". Same with sound.

Hope that helps,
Radek

Last I checked, VDubMod didn't play the subs... if there is a way to do it, I don't know what it is.

I want to say no, but I don't have an appropraite file on hand to test with.

thats, thats alot of good info :D anyway, how do i direct stream copy ? and will things work out (without the subs) if i just open it in vdub and convert it to avi ? i think il just convert the files to a low quality divx (around 50-60MB) to make editing speedy, but i dont want subs.

Direct Stream Copy is an option under the video menu.

AFAIK virtualdub won't work, it has to be virtualdubmod. At least that's the only version of virtualdub I can open them with. Here is the virtualdubmod faq which talks about how to open both audio and subtitle streams for OGM. Keep in mind I haven't actually done this myself, but I assume the virtualdubmod homepage knows more than I would anyway. I have no idea how to open ogm directly in an editing program like Premiere, Vegas, or whatever. I personally open in virtualdubmod then export to Huffyuv. For space reasons you might want to do clip selection here instead of just exporting the entire episode, the one time I did the entire episode it took ~10 gig.

well, what i now do, with vobs, for source footage, is open them in dvd2avi and convert them to divx at 384kbps (single pass) with fast as the quality/speed seting and 150 max keyframe. qualitie's crap but the files are prety small (55-60MB, i cut out the opening and closing credits before converting) and prety damn fast when im editing with them (vegas has no problems handling whatever i wana do with divx files). then when i finish editing and re-encode the scene's from the vob to huffy, then just reconsruct the avi.

just wondering though, if i use this technique and encode the ogm files into divx with vdub mod, will eveerything be shiny and clean as it should, or will i get some wierded problems ?

The newest version of VDubMod can open OGMs. It kills the audio and subs, but it leaves you with a shiney AVI file if you direct steram copy into an AVI. I did it trying to watch them better cause of my shitty computer...

/me kicks computer VERY HARD
