Would a heartbeat/flashing effect be considered overdone?

Post by inthesto » Tue Mar 30, 2004 10:06 pm

Song I'm using in my latest AMV has a heartbeat during the beginning in the end. Naturally, my first thought was "Hey, I should add a flash effect thing for every heartbeat."

Then my second thought was "Actually, that's probably been done a million times."

So would something like that just be considered cheap and cheesy?

What do you mean by flash effect thingy? You mean strobing?

If so, I doubt a heart beats 30 times a second :P

Errr...I'm not really good with technical terms here.

I meant every time there's a heartbeat, the screen fades to white and back.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me said song is "Somebody" by Depeche Mode...

And if it is, then yes, I'd consider flashes a bad idea. The song is so quiet and subdued at that point that a flash would disturb the mood, IMHO. At least a white flash, I mean. Maybe a black flash would work better.

A more appropriate effect would be fading to black imo

Or grey/black flashes, like SSJVegita used in Fallen Heroes and Lost Love.

A good example of how to execute this effect is in VicBond's video Charcoal Sketched Dreams.

Actually, I'm using "Control Crisis" from The King of Fighters '97 AST (not that I expect many people to know what that is). Believe me, the heartbeat is an intense one, but the effect over it just seems a little too obvious to be original at all.

However, I do have to consider that the music was originally the "Riot of the Blood" theme.
