Blu-ray in general isn't exactly new news :P

Dual layer Blu-ray discs are though.
www.Doom9.org wrote:CeBit is still ongoing, and today we turn to Blu-ray: Panasonic has demonstrated the first dual layer Blu-ray disc (link in German), capable of storing up to 50 GB on a single side of a Blu-ray disc. A standalone dual layer Blu-Ray writer is supposed to be released in Japan as early as August this year.

Remember when CD roms first came out and people were like "wow, there is no way anybody is going to make programs big enough to use all that space"?

You could back up your entire computer to one disk and have room left over.

I wonder how long before this new media (if it catches on) will take to get to... basically where we are now?

I'd say give it 3 years before the drives actually become affordable.
Of course I just pulled that figure out of my ass, but it sounds kinda reasonable.

yeah but, like, 50GB. with that much space you could back up your whole anime colection in huffyuv, which, while meaningless, would rock (though by that time HDD will have poped 1000GB for the home user)

HD DVD only holds 15GB per side/layer where as Blu-ray holds 25
