While we're on the subject of subtitles, I've lately been wondering if it's possible to rip subtitles from a VOB file, edit them, and then encode them into the video stream. Is this possible without capturing?

I think the subtitles in VOB are bitmap images, so you can't just edit the text.

You can rip the subtitles. I usually use GordianKnot package, it has all the tools needed to rip and encode from DVD.

If all you need is a short part subtitled, you might be faster to just make your own.

Use photoshop, make your subs, one line per layer.
Save it as a layered photoshop file, import it and choose the layer that you need (it will show the text in the description).

or if you don't have photoshop, you can even just use a regular paint program (although centering them by eye alone blows, so they'll probably turn out kinda crappy). Just make the background black, pop them into premiere and use the transparency tools.

www.doom9.org - real answer
www.google.com - sarcastic answer (as seen in many other posts)

There's also lots of other DVD-ripping and compression stuff there.

What about subbing larger segments of video? Such as subbing the entirety of Evangelion?
