Just thinking...[future storage media?]
After being a noob and using downloaded footage, then finally getting a job in august and upgrading my computer with a dvd rom and buying assloads of dvd's. One thing bothers me...When will dvd's be replaced by something higher? This question may have been asked before so im sorry if im bringing this up again, but what are your thoughts about this?

There are a couple of ways it could go:
method 1: Bigger storage
With blu-ray and other technologies enabling much greater storage on data discs it is easily possible that MPEG2 will be extended for HDTV formats and HDDVD will be released.
method 2: better compression
mpeg4 variants, WMV, VP6 and h.264 are all being closely watched by the industry as possible new standards for hardware playback. EVD is a standard being pushed in Hong Kong which uses VP6 as the codec for compression (similar size/quality ratio as divx et al). It's too early to tell whether these initiatives will be sucessful.
method 3: mixture of both
I can see both technologies being major players, with mpeg4/h.264 streams being used for transmission and HDTV-MPEG2 being used for off-the-counter products like movie releases.
As for when... who knows.

Nah. I think this is the way it will play out:madbunny wrote:When that happens I guess you can just store your dvd player in the garage next to that old betamax, atari 2600, and those boxes of laserdisks.
1. HD-DVD is released in about three incompatible incarnations. We have too many competing standards; consumers are confused.
2. Voices of reason spread warnings about the inevitable draconian content controls required by HD-DVD encoding standards. The geeks rise against this, although many still use HD-DVD in secret.
3. Somebody cracks the inevitably crappy content encryption scheme.
4. HD-DVD CCA whines like a 4-year-old hit with a stick. Voices of reason bitchslap the baby and tell them to STFU, with international support. It sort of works.
5. John Q. Public picks up some of this eventually. Chaos ensues.
I suppose it's fairly obvious that I don't have a very high opinion of corporations or any of this new HD-DVD stuff, especially given the DVD debacle. But hey, you never know.
