Anime/manga that involves Buddhism?

Post by dokool » Fri Feb 20, 2004 2:14 am

A friend asked me if I knew any, and I couldn't think of any offhand, so I bring it to the forum. Any suggestions?

Shin Kujaku / Peacock King has a few reference from Buddhism. It's not a really good anime but it's not bad either. It has a lot of supernatural stuffed in.

I think one of Haunted Junction's characters is a Buddhist. Also, Saber Marionette J to X has a few episodes that take place in a Buddhist monastery.

Vash from Trigun believes that of any kind should never have to happen, which coincides with the Buddhist beliefs of almost complete pacifism...maybe if you look at it from an angle with your eyes kind of squinted you can see it... :?

The Saiyuki series has Buddhism all over the place. However, the main priest character seems to be the opposite of a Bhuddist priest even though he is one. (i.e. drinks beer, smokes, kills, etc ...) In fact, the whole series was based on an Eastern Asian folklore on the spread of Bhuddism. I hope this helps.

Tezuka's Phoenix (now getting a high-quality hardcover US release) is not only a major-series-length comic treatment of the life of Buddha, but also widely recognized as one of the best works in the history of comics. Go there first (if you've got a decent comic shop in your area), hunt around for side references elsewhere after.
