What the.. This is silly..

Post by -Asher » Wed Feb 11, 2004 6:33 am

Well, I just came on site to download an AMV or two, if the site was really good, would have donated or something. But I cant even find out, so I wont bother, since I am on a 'trial' for like two weeks.

Anyways - This is to anyone who is interested in improving this world a little. I am willing to host someone totally free on a server (120gigz hard drive, 700gigz bandwith) if someone can create a site like this one for people to post their anime video's.

This place gets more pledges, more money then thousands and better sites with better services.

www.dlcomics.com is a better site that runs on donations as well as a savey business plan. However, does not make everything COSTLY.

Well if anyone is interested, email me at gatekeeper501@hotmail.com
as the server that is run here, costs near exactly 1/17th of the amount of the donations. Someones making a healthy profit. And the webdesign is a free BBS board download. Lets build a better world! FREE IS BETTER!

You can download videos that have DIRECT and INDIRECT links. The 2 weeks probation period is only for local downloads.

a 120 GB Hard drive on your server? LOL
there are more than 9000 AMV's hosted on this website's server...do you really think it could fit on 120Go ?

This is a community. Therefore, when you insult this website's system (donations, etc...) you also insult people who made these actual donations...do you really think now people will be willing to follow you ?

Come with something better than this site rather than an obscure, not likely to work, idea.
Then maybe you'll be able to talk about what you don't really know.
Nothing's totally free, where does you server come from ? How do you pay for it ? Are you philantrop ? (is this the correct english word ?)

You deserve to be flamed, and actually this is the first time I think that about someone, since I've been on this site.

Its philanthropist, close enough though.

As for Asher? Hmm... Perhaps a little gentler in your tone and your suggestions would be appreciated. As it is I have better things to do. They do not involve listening to you.

I would venture that others would feel the same.

This site goes through far more than "120gigz" and "700gigz" of storage space and bandwidth usage.

Before posting any sort of reply to any comment in this thread, I suggest that you

(1) figure out how to spell "gigs" correctly
(2) get a clue about how much storage space and bandwidth consumption a download system like this site needs (hint: it's almost certainly much more than you can offer, KaZaA-boy)
(3) find out exactly why the two week waiting period exists
(4) find out why the site exists (hint 2: it's not the download center)

Items 1-4 can be found on the front page of this site.

"KaZaA Boy" hah hah hah!!!!!

I donated here and Kazaa's like, the ghey. I don't get opinions in KaZaA. And I download like a slug from it since everyone who has a connection is usually on slow upload. This site has a FANTASTIC server which has lightning - endowed transfer rates...

I praise you who donated to make this site a true anime music videos site. I curse you who think you know better...

120GB/9300 videos = average 13 MB per video.

My average distribution filesize: 35 MB.

average Donut gain rate over the last 10 days: about 30 videos/day.

Not only is the proposed system about half of the size (est) it'd take to store the current Donut, there's no provision for adding the 500-900 MB *per day* it takes to keep the system operational. At the above rate your server would fill completely up in about 4 months. Of course, the bandwidth costs would completely burn out long before that.

Let's look at the past week alone, and assume that videos on the 21 pages of this last week's star scale list were dled only 5 times apiece (several on the first page alone are over 50).

so: 2197 videos downloaded 5 times each, at 20 MB per (underestimating again, probably) equals about 214 GB of bandwidth. Your system CANNOT afford to use more than 175 GB per week, and even an incredibly lowballed estimate of the last week's performance would have you running dry by month's end. I'm sure that if I ran a sum on the total downloads instead of just assuming minimum, that number would be increased by a factor of two to three at the very least.

Do you *like* getting into financial holes with hosting companies? Do you *like* pissing users off with poor quality of service? Did you even do ANY research on how ridiculous it is to even consider doing something like the Donut?

This was just a crazy idea of Phade's for a long, long time before he found a hosting solution willing to pull it off. Now, thanks to the willingness of the community to put their wallets where their ideals are, it's reality, and it kicks a lot of ass. The speeds on dl and ul alike can fully respond to even the most high-speed connections, and broken downloads are almost unheard-of.

If you honestly think that you can run a server with *less* space and *less* bandwidth than the Donut to provide the same level of service, without the restrictions that throttle off the hit-and-gone audience (reduction is, according to some potentially unreliable recent statistics, by about a factor of 3), you are living in an honest-to-god fool's paradise.

I've got this bridge to sell; PM me if you're interested.

You make very good points with hard evidence, but you forget that this site which runs on donations is just so COSTLY for everyone.

Hi -Asher,
I think you have good intentions of offering members here lower costs for online hosting. But it seems you have mistaken how this site operates.

All members have full non-administrative privileges of the site but vary in restrictions:

The first two weeks a member joins he or she has the following restrictions:
1. May not download videos stored on the local server.
2. A page requesting a donation appears whenever the member downloads a video stored on the local server.
3. A page requesting a donation frequently appears whenever the member uses the search function in the main menu.
4. The member sees on the member main page only the last video uploaded to the local server rather than the last ten videos uploaded to the local server the donating member is allowed to see.

Two weeks after his or her join date, the restriction 1 is lifted.

Any member (including new members) may lift all restrictions for 1 year by donating any amount of money.

So as you see, members do not need to pay anything at all to enjoy everything this site has to offer. And in conclusion, you can't offer cheaper hosting.

If you intend to compete against this website (even though this is a non-profit site), you will need, as others have pointed out, a larger server and more bandwidth, not to mention an a webmaster who understands of the needs of video editors and has good relations with video editors.

First off, I would like to ask how this site is bad. OMFG, I have to wait for two weeks. Look around, you'll see that some of us survived this travesty. Also, free is better is a slippery-slop falacy that has been vastly overused in the internet. By you saying that, one can assume you pay for nothing. Not only is this a crime, but it damages the economy. Were everything free, we would eventually route to a communist society. In a perfect world, this would work. But the world is not perfect, and let's just leave it at that. Hold on, I'm almost done. If you want a "better" site, why do you want to model it after this COSTLY and obsolite one? It makes no sence. Also, in order to have a free server, there must be one of two things in place: a dedicated server which you own, or a philanthropic host. Because you have limited bandwidth, I am assuming the later. The last thing, and to beat a dead horse, this site rapes 700 gig of bandwidth, and demolishes the 120 gig space limit. If you want a real free server and a better site, first go buy your own server, then write your own site.

Oh, and if you plan to use Kazaa, not only is that illegal, but with only one user with the file and billions of users with hundreds of files each, your hosted videos would never be found. Sorry to break it to you.
