Some help with Macross Plus
I've been wanting to check out this title for a while now, but I'm stumped as to which Macross Plus to get - the OAV edition or the movie edition? At first I wanted to get the movie, since I'm in a bit of a money crunch, but the review at AnimeOnDVD.com said that the video quality isn't too good and the subtitles are hard-coded onto the video. So I read the reviews for the OAVs, and apparently Manga screwed up with the audio on them, using a 4.1 track instead of 5.1.
But what I'm really concerned about is the actual story itself. I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of technical quality for a good story. But while some people say the movie does better in terms of clarification and tightening of the plot, others have said the the OAVs have better flow and transitions.
So now I'm in a dilemma. What do y'all think?

I bought the movie version. Apparently it has some extra footage than the OAV's, or so MANGA says. Although, the movie version doesn't have the dub, so if you care about hearing that it could be a downer.

I've seen both. There is footage in the OAV that isn't in the movie and vice versa. Overall I wouldn't say there is much difference in clarifying the story. You get the same story, just different eye candy.
Those are the main differences I can think of. I may have some of them mixed up as to whether they were in movie or OAV. They use some different BGMs for some of the same scenes in both OAV and movie. The main big thing is most of the 3rd episode of the OAV is left out. In the OAV when Guld uses the YF-21 to slam his VF11 into the desert, Isamu walks away with no injuries. In the movie, this lands him in the hospital. In the OAV, Isamu was placed in the hospital because Guld snuck live ammo into the tests between the YF-19 and YF-21 when they decide to fight it out on the test range. This does not happen in the movie.
In the movie, Isamu definetely has a 'closer' relationship with Lucy than in the OAV. Sharon Apple's takeover of Macross city involves her flying around singing Angel. You get to fully see what kind of sacrifice Guld made by slamming the YF-21 into the Ghost.
OAV you see what Isamu was doing before he arrived at New Edwards. (Battling rogue Zentradi battleuits in his VF11.) The Sharon Apple concert is longer. Isamu and Miyu see a huge Pterasuar.

Sorry, I got so caught up in trying to remember what appeared where. I prefer the OAV. That's what I first saw and loved. I like the series so much I got the movie when it came out. I was somewhat dissapointed with the movie because it didn't really add that much and it really cut out more than it added, IMO.Darksyde wrote: Which one do you prefer or advice us to watch?

Here's my view on Macross Plus.
See episodes 1 - 3 of the OAV...
then watch the last part of the movie starting right where the 3rd OAV left off.
The OAV works a little better than the movie in my opinion, because we have time to really get to know the characters and things have a better pacing. However, the last portion of the movie has EVERYTHING that is in part 4 of the OAV with about 10-15 minutes of extra footage.
When I saw the OAV, I said part 4 seemed to be missing a few things. I listed all the things that I felt were needed...
and sure enough, EVERY THING I MENTIONED was there in the movie version of the ending.
Anyway... that's my view on it.

There are two kinds of people in this world:
Those who divide people into two kinds of groups
and those who don't.
