Actually, by law Copyright is granted the moment you write it. You don't have register it in order to posesss the copyright.

Registration of a copyright however makes it signifigantly easier to to protect in court, since there's much more paperwork. You can however, say it's copywritten to you the moment you write it.

It was once suggested to me that making a copy, sealing it in an envelope, and mailing it to yourself helps to verify that you did in fact write it when you did (by the postmark date).
