Additionally I'd mandate that all anime footage must be played backwards and upside down. To make the contest experience richer and allow more people to compete in the finals, there should be (at least) four AMVs playing on the screen simultaneously. Sixteen at once if technical capabilities can manage it.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Alright.. B&W AMV.. with 16 running splits all at the same time.. up-side-down with japanese j-rock.. while everything running backwards.. okay I think I can do that! =)

I think Vic actually pulled off something similar for the Anime USA 2003 intro video which featured every competing video being shown at the same time during a "fly-by" of the screens.

Well I guess I'll be disqualified for next year's amv contest, what with mine being in color, despite following all those other rules by odd coincidence. ;) ;)

It may not be something you can affect, but for the last several years I have noticed some technical issues in the Main events room the AMV contest plays in. It's nice and big but the color (course maybe not an issue now? ^_~ ) on the screen has been the most washed out of all the screens. Maybe it's been where I was sitting, but the screen quality seemed worse than the Video screening room projectors.

The other issue was the sound balance in that same room. Again, maybe it's the size of the room and the system isn't meant to sound like Bose...but I figured if you could keep these in mind while preparing for the next con, that would be neat-o.

Good luck. ^_^ I've only been to Otakon once, Matt's last year, and I thought it was great. He really knows how to run things, so you've got a lot to live up to. ^_~ I hope to be attending next year, so we'll see how you match up to him.

Seconded, except my complaint is with the sound balance in Video Room 1... but either way, a little less bass and more treble would be appreciated, if possible.

Hmmmm.... I'll have to ask our technical guys about that. The center screen was front projection, while the two screens on the side of the stage were rear-projection, so that may account for the contrast between the two sets of images.... It may be a moot point for 2004, though, because we're looking into new video equipment suppliers.

I have to apologize for the equalization in Video Room One's sound system for Otakon 2003.

When we had set up the room's sound system on Thursday, the test tape we used to check it out was a normal anime show, and the mix was acceptable for that. It wasn't until after the Saturday AMV screening had started that I realized that the sound requirements for AMVs were much more stringent than for regular programs (because of the music). :(

Am I the only one who thought the video looked great? Perhaps it's because my previous cons haven't done the greatest job on the AMV contest or maybe because I was near the center, but I thought it looked fabulous. That room was great!

Yeah I came to see my video replayed in the 2nd showing on a Saturday and wow...you could barely understand the words to the music which was unfortunate since nearly 50% of the vids (maybe more) really relied on the lyrics for their syncs and flow. At the same time, it wasn't that big of a deal since all videos had the same bad sound set-up.

Only thing I'd like to add to this is the staff member present during the rescreening. They weren't exactly the most knowledgeable and IIRC my video was first and was in black and white initially (or really high contrast) and it took the tech like 2 or 3 minutes to stop the tape and correct it (about half of my video, thankfully they restarted it). Eventually the picture had color again, but it was still really bright and Trythil's video (which I think was after mine) was very hard to distuingish since he had a few overlays.

Might wanna look into putting more video knowledgeable staff in there. There was only one person I believe.

I'll look into it, but I don't know how many 'knowledgable staffers' we can afford to have at the screenings during the con....but I'll do what I can

No problem. These aren't demands and are just requests/suggestions :).
