I've want to experiment with this for a while, but I actually don't know where to begin to think of scripting it. I know that AD used a newly created effect created by his friends, but I would like to know how to go about scripting your own effects. Are there any recommendations about ways to get started with this?
Make the assumption that all I know about coding is clicking and dragging and web design.

Well you don't actually script the effects, it's more like programming. You need to look into the program you want to create the effect for and find out if it has a SDK(Software Development Kit). From there you can find out what you need to program a plugin/effect for that software.
As for the actual effects programing, it helps to learn some 2D graphics programming. Which is not exactly a piece of cake to learn.
On the other hand, I do know that After Effects has it's own scripting language. You may want to look into there. But most effects require a pretty decent math background for you to be able to make some neat things.
