Otakon's New AMV contest coordinator

Hi everyone,

I'm Geoff Beebe, the new guy in charge of the AMV contest at otakon. I don't show my face around here often, but that's going to change...I won't be ever-present, but I will keep my eye around and say the occasional blurb or three.

Matt Pyson's going to be sending me a rough draft of the new AMV contest rules soon, and all the ground work for it will be set up (hopefully) by the third week of January.

Just so some people who "have to know" won't ask, I will be doing pre-screenings like last year, so don't you worry, it was one of the parts I liked about the contest.

I would also like your input. If you have something to say about the contest (gripes or whatever you want to say) please tell me by email to otakonAMV1 at hotmail.com

I'll consider everything said.

Pretty big boots to fill, but I'm sure Matt will show you how to tie the laces

Otakon have a great formula for their contests. Stick to the basic recipie and ask for help when you need it and everything will go swimmingly.

I agree, the format of Otakon is good, but with the ever growing lineup of vidoes, it may be a good idea at looking at expanding a few things like having a few judged catagories on the technical or artistic side of things since it's pretty hard to have the audiance who may not be into making AMV videos judge qualities liek that...

Agreed. I was discussing this with Rozard the other day, and one of the things he mentioned was that there should be an Artistic category. I think one of the examples we discussed was jbone's Urban Ragnarok and how while it's an incredible video, it may not have been "Drama".

Also, a pre-prescreening would be nice, based off of my experience at the King of Prussia prescreening with rampant subtitles, bad video quality, etc... the fewer vids that the prescreeners have to watch, the better.

Like everyone else, I agree that, with the exception of a possible judges' award for techincal and artistic videos (after all, there's a few non-winning videos each year that deserve some mention), the Otakon contest doesn't need any real change. One more thing worth mentioning: keep up the tradition of announcing the winning videos during the intermission at Cosplay (as the Cosplay judges decide on the winning skits and costumes).

Many thanks to Geoff for stepping up to act as Otakon's AMV Coordinator!

Now that that's taken care of, we can all get ready for the 2004 Contest, and I can gear down and finish up the remaining work for the 2003 contest (like getting the @*^#%&*!! web page updated, tape copies finished, and the submitters' feedback compiled & mailed out

As far as introducing new directions for the AMV Contest, I recommend banning all AMVs that are in color and/or use songs with english lyrics. Additionally I'd mandate that all anime footage must be played backwards and upside down. To make the contest experience richer and allow more people to compete in the finals, there should be (at least) four AMVs playing on the screen simultaneously. Sixteen at once if technical capabilities can manage it.

That'd be awesome. It'd be like ACen 2002's Potpourri, but far cooler.

I think. That's just based on what people have told me of the ACen 2002 AMV contest.
