I can sympathize. I'm a big fan of AMVs and till recently did not have access to the resources needed to make them. Then by chance I landed a job with a local editing company and now I get to use stuff at work. Up until then I had no actual experience using computers to edit video, but my knowledge of computers was enough for them to give me a shot. True I spend most of my time dealing with the frustrations of editing customers home videos. And by the time I come home from work the last thing I want to do is sit in front of a computer and edit more video. Really tests the limits of the dividing line between work and leisure.
A suggestion: AMVs have been made on computers for several years now. You probably are unable to afford using current software and current equipment, but have you considered that good AMVs were made for years using software and computers in the late 90's. You can probably get an older version editing software that will run on your computer. True it won't have the bells and whistles that you have with the current versions, but it still gets the job done. And old versions are usually sold very cheap.
I'm a user of ULead Media Studio. It's priced lower than Adobe and does pretty much the same tasks. Video Studio has the essentials needed to get started and is usually priced for less than $100. What kind of system do you have? I can probably help determining what version can run on the computer.
(I have yet to finish Escaflowne and I don't know the song. Sorry)
