I dont feel that shinji is a bitch or a butch, i feel that he is just a normal guy that is put under a lot of pressure, just like wat uncle milo put nicely. He does grow up a bit from wat i noticed, but then again he doesnt become all macho and stuff. He is just like any normal kid buthe has resposibilities of an adult. He also gots some issues that would make his character a bit different, like the issue with his father and all.samurairyu wrote:Of course the battle was irrelevant, and I will add that Shinji never truly faces his himself or resolves anything. He never accepts his fate as someone that other people depend on. People die because of his constant bitching, even if he did become a complete person and came to grips with his reality doesn't justify their deaths...a real hero puts others before himself, not the other way around. Through the whole series(which I did enjoy) I wanted to shake Shinji and tell him to get over it. So your mother is dead. So you are alone. So your father is a jerk. That is life!Shun wrote:UncleMilo wrote:I can't agree with the question.
Shinji is neither a bitch nor a butch.
He is a kid who lost his mother and was abandoned by his father. He was emotionally damaged and suddenly thrust into a horrible situation. Over the course of the show, he discovered how to open up... to make friends... he challeneged his own fear and confronted the things that frightened him. Like many of us, some of the lessons he learned stuck while others didn't hold and e had to learn them again.
His story is one of empowerment and overall and optimistic message.
Shinji is not a bitch... he's a child who has more thrust upon him than a child should have.
Shinji is not butch. He doesn't become some tough hombre... nor does he become some optimistic war hound screamin' "bring it on"
He just finds the courage to face himself... to face what he is and try to work with what he's got in the face of all the rest of humanity.
I think Shinji is an amazingly complicated character and his story help characterize problems in life we all face... problems of forming friendships, of developing trust and overcoming obstacles as best as you can. Learning how to find your own voice... learning how to be who you are and learning to like who you are.
Shinji is a true hero, just not a conventional one.

Exactly, I also wanted to add that the comment that was made earlier about evangelion being about giant robots and the such is rediculous, if you actually thought that the conclusion of the fight between Angels and Eva was the point of the story then you need to go back and watch the series 2 to 3 more times.
How can you make a thread asking if he is the weaker or stronger side of human when the whole story is focused tword him just being able to be himself? Of course the giant robots were part of it but it could of been anything, he could of had to be on a space ship, survived during dinasour times, ect ect, that really didnt matter at all.
Good explanation milo, bad thread
As the great Shaka(Buddha) understood: Life is suffering, to know life is to know pain, then you die.
The question would be better stated as whether one believes that Shinji's character is a person to be annoyed with or one to be held above the normal kin.
I choose the former.
Me personally, i wouldnt neccessarily call him a heroe, i would just say that he was doing his job the best way he knew how, and i give him props for that and thats all.
I didnt fell that shinji was that annoying, he just had lots of problems. I dont really get the other option "one to be held above a normal kin???" wat that suppose to mean. Can u clarify that a bit, i might even agree with that if i knew wat it meant.
