Distrobution of a DVD Image

here is a general question...

what is the best way to distrobut an image of a fully authored DVD?

why don't we say that someone authored a DVD full of AMV goodness... and felt like distro-ing the thing... but was far to lazy to actually burn and mail off those pesky discs...

I was thinking that I would author the thing to a .ISO file (or is the .img file that dvd meastro outputs better?) then sticking it onto a bittorrent tracker with a permanent seed...

that would allow anybody with a dvd burner to download it... and begin distroing the disc them selves...

this is not for distroing the individual components of a DVD... but the who darn thing...

is ISO and bittorrent the best way? or is somethign better?
this is not really for mass downloads... since the only people that would be interested in the file are those with burners them selves....

the basic idea of this dvd image thing is I am to lazy to make copies of the dvds...

other people might not be so lazy...

Yep, that would be the best method of distribution. I think .img format would have more support, not sure about that though.

Bit Torrent is probably the best way to go. The only problem with that, is that BT works best when a decent number of people all want to ge a file at the same time, and BT can take advantage of each downloader's upload capacity to help share the load. If it's just one or two people at a time who want a particular image, and they don't stay on the torrent as seeders pretty much 24/7, your "permanent seed" will pretty much be shouldering the burden by itself most of the time.

The only other realistic alternative I'm aware of is ftp . To use that effectively, I've found it best to use Winrar or winzip to split the image file (or any large file) into chunks of between 10 and 50 megs. that way, if something breaks during downloading, only the corrupt pieces need to be redownloaded, and that's a lot better than finding out you have a corrupt 4 gig .iso that needs to be re-downloaded.

I've pretty much only burned .iso images with DVDdecrypter, and that has worked really well. I'm not sure if it supports .img files or not.

...I forgot to mention that because there are programs that can mount a disc image as a virtual drive, you might find demand is a little higher than you might think. It's quite possible to download a DVD image, mount it, watch it, and then burn it to a series of CDs as 700Mb spanned archives.

DVD volumes are composed of an ISO-standard filesystem and a DVD container. It is not necessary to do an image file if the person at the recieving end has software and brains.

For this, P2P software has it's weak point: not /that/ many people would be downloaading it, much less sharing it.

I recommend that you place it on an HTTP server in file format and allow peoples to download it. At least with HTTP, they can't l33ch it as with FTP. And DVDs are a LOT of bandwidth.

what would the difference in leeching if you use FTP and not HTML? nothing. and simply limiting the bandwidth will remove any bandwidth issues.
i would go bittorent with a perm seed.

Probably not, P2P is mostly for smaller files.
