Sometimes they may not be noticable but it increases the chance of edge distortions (often leaking of green chroma and other nasties) and various other issues.
Or (in my case) non-consistent (its sometimes there, sometimes isn't; seems to depend on exactly what footage I'm using. and from what part of the movie/show) smiring and bright pink leakage around the edges. Only with XviD though. I'm buggered if I know why, but it doesn't seem to affect DivX 5.
