I think Lyrs brings up a good point though, about emotional commitment... or a different sort of emotion. He didn't view the president like everybody else did, JFK was just another guy to him. Maybe not even a president at all, that's just a title. He was first and foremost a "brother" and that's the only thing Gump can relate him too.
