What is it about Anime/AMVs??

Post by y2kwizard » Sun Aug 18, 2002 4:44 pm

I am a newbie to the whole AMV/Anime scene, although I do other types of video editing and watch other types of movies.

I was just wondering what it is about Anime or AMVs that are so awesome, that make people want to get really involved in them? Is it the stories? The actual animation techniques? Drawing techniques? Why do people go fanatical over them?Just wondering. I've never seen an anime episode (maybe parts of DBZ).

Also, I was wondering what a good series would be to start with. It can't get too racy...just about PG-13 level because of the parents (I'm a high school sophomore). And I guess I don't really want it to be a huge series, cuz that would cost lots of money..just some small but well-known series.

THanks a lot for y'all's input, and I would greatly appreciate anyone's opinion.

Some real recommendations to introduce you to anime:

Record of Lodoss War OVA - medieval fantasy, known as the Dungeons and Dragons of anime, beautifully animated 13 episode OVA series, with swords, sorcery, dragons, and kings. Some scenes have blood. Available at most places that sell anime (don't confuse with the 26-ep TV series).

Vampire Princess Miyu OVA - Modern Gothic series from 1987, this 4 episode OVA one of the classics of the genre. Miyu is a mysterious girl, and the Spiritualist Himiko is determined to uncover her secrets and link to the mysterious occurences that she's been exposed to recently in her work. But can she handle the real connection between the two? A Dark series, contains monsters but contains no nudity and only a little blood. Available at most places that sell anime (don't confuse with the 26-ep TV series).

Boys Be... - Not commercially available in english but available as a fansub, this is a recent 13 ep TV series about trying to figure girls out, as well as guys trying to figure themselves out. Sometimes funny, sometimes touching. No blood, no nudity (unless you count underwear as nudity).

I would recommend Oh My Goddess (aka Ah! My Goddess) because it's a really short series: 2 DVDs (5 episodes total) and a movie. The animation is excellent. However, if you don't like romance, you wouldn't like it. It's about the main character, Keiichi, and Belldandy, a goddess who granted Keiichi's wish to stay with him forever. It's a very cute series and one of the first I bought.

I would also very strongly recommend Trigun since it's just plain awesome! It's in a set of 8 DVDs (26 episodes) which can be pretty pricey, though. Neon Genesis Evangelion is also 26 episodes, but it's a very popular anime (top one on this site) and also well worth taking a look at.

Usually what I do is download the first few episodes on a p2p program like KaZaA, and if I like the anime, I'll buy it (usually over the Internet because I don't have much of a selection in my city :( .)

There's a lot of good anime out there. I have trouble picking them myself. You just have to look hard and figure out what you want. Good luck with that! :)

Yes!! Very good family oriented anime.... Cool Devices is the funniest!!

Yes, once you make your first one, you're hooked!!!! I got into this scene as more of an artist. "I want to create something that people would like." I'm still trying to do that. Creating an AMV takes a lot more time to make than you would think. You have to think of what type of song to use, type of anime, how you want everything to work out/sync up, what type of video(Drama, comedy, action, etc), should it have a story to it, what is my general audience, how many people would watch this video, and so on...

Also, if all you've seen in anime was just some DBZ, then you haven't seen what anime really is. There are a lot more out there. DBZ is the so called 'My first anime' kind of anime... Anime is a whole different world! People can recommend anime but it's up to you to figure out what suits your tastes.

Evangelion is definately NOT an intro-to-anime series. Eva is a real love it or hate it series. Not an ice breaker.

Pretty much what everyone said so far is what I like about anime. Once I discovered you could make amv's on your pc, i began to love anime even more, because I love working wit pcs. (just built my own)

These are two series I would recommend for any person new to anime. Another one that is good is Scryed. Its like the x-men of anime.
