Yea, well... you're right. Happens all the time.
So, the way I usually do things, is either start with no idea what I'm drawing or start with a vague idea and go more specific.
It's hit-and-miss, but generally works better than planning it all out and then seeing it suck. You have to be a real hardened artist to be able to transpose what you have in your head onto paper with a good degree of accuracy.
