Accidental videos?

Post by Kaji01 » Wed Aug 20, 2003 11:12 pm

Ever had one of those times when you've been experimenting with software and just stumbled across something that worked better than it should have? Or times where you made a major mistake on something in a video and found out you liked the mistake better than what you originally planned?

As for myself, I've done so twice, both through experimentation with software...

The first was my first time experimenting with ripping DVDs and adding new audio via Windows Movie Maker. I ripped the season 2 Ranma opening from my bootleg DVDs and picked out the first song that I saw in my music folder: AC/DC's "Big Balls". The first couple seconds of the video played before the music kicked in, but from there it worked out beautifully, with the footage matching up to key phrases in the song really well. Had to fade out the second half of the song though because I ran out of video partway through.

The second one was when I learned that Sound Forge 4.5 can work with AVI files, and I decided to see what I could do with them in there, hoping that perhaps Sound Forge could play video in reverse like it could songs. So, I pulled up an old favorite (FLCL done to Deep Purple's "Speed King", I'd credit the author if I could remember who it was, I can't find it in the database anymore and there are no tags at the front or end of the video). I then decided to first try switching out the audio again, and switched "Speed King" for Alice Cooper's "Feed My Frankenstein". Well, in a rhythmic sense a lot of key beats in the music lined up to key points in the video, and the psychadelic part in the middle of the video matched perfectly with the solo. Then I tried to reverse the entire video, and ended up with the video playing forward with "Feed My Frankenstein" playing in reverse. Needless to say, the results were interesting, especially since the beats still seemed to line up somehow...

How about some of the other people out there? Any similar stories to tell?
