We had the digisubs [a while ago before licensing]...
My friend then got the HK dvds [which had REALLY shitty subs...]
Still, I'd consider getting it to say "I completed" my Tenchi collection...

My friend "Brain" fansubbed GXP for his anime club at GaTech. He brough be all 10 discs worth.
I must say, GXP is the first Tenchi series since Muyo I have found worthy of purchasing on DVD. The rest I bought on LD ($3 per disc, used.) But the American version is going to be ever so wrong. R2 is the way to go w/ this series.

Well, I've seen all 26 episodes of this show, and I can assure you that even though all the Tenchi characters are not present, you should fully enjoy this show, especially if you like delving into the physics and liniage of the Tenchi OVA universe.
The show takes place in the original Tenchi universe, which means that it is not a spinoff, it is not a "fake" story, it's the real deal, co-written by Masaki Kajishima and Yousuke Kuroda. The show features very nice smooth digital animation, beautiful CG for the spaceships, great character designs (Similar to those seen in "Dual: Parallel Trouble Adventure"), and some really slick storyline ideas.
I'd like to correct some things here. First of all, the main character's name is Seina, not Seinan. Some people in the show refer to him as "Sainan" because of his bad luck, which is legendary. Because of this luck, his life has never gone the way he has wanted it to... but that's all about to change.
In a single day, he encounters Amane Kaunaq, who gives him a pamphlet. Later on, due to some bumblings of his family, he finds himself drafted into the Galaxy Police and attending the GP academy, under the watch of Airi Magama, who is Tenchi's grandmother.
His crush from Earth, Kiriko Masaki, is also in the Galaxy Police, and ends up becoming protective of Seina as he journey's forth into space. Also keeping an eye on this boy are Seto Kamiki, known as Jurai's Devil Princess, and Ryouko Balta, a very unconventional space pirate whose namesake is the Ryouko we all know and love.
While at the GP academy, Seina makes friends with two other students, Kenneth Sabaru and Roger Gawalder. They share some misadventures on campus, and eventually go their seperate ways went sent into space for their on-site training.
After an incident in episode 10, Seina makes his worst enemy ever, Tarant Shank - An infamous space pirate who is feared throughout the galaxy as a ruthless killer and an unforgiving foe.
Through all of this excitement, Seina's luck seems to be turning around somehow, as he manages to slip through incident after incident unscathed. He has an ability to attract pirates, which could be seen as bad luck, but also has the ability to somehow manage to defeat them every time, be it through his allies or through his own courage.
Eventually, he is even given an amazing ship, the Kamidake-2, which was created by THE Washu Hakubi. The ship even comes complete with its very own Cabbit, which the crew (Consisting of Seina, Kiriko, Amane, and Ryouko Balta) name Fuku.
From this point on, it's high sailing in space as they move from one adventure to the next, battling space pirates, meeting strange people, and generally having a great time.
I don't want to spoil any more for those whohave not seen this show, but let me just say that it is incredible, and is definitely worth a watch, especially if you're a fan of Tenchi Muyo.
Animation
The animation is superb, as I said earlier. All digital, with fabulous CG space battles.
Sound
Sound effects and music are as nice as you'd expect from AIC and Vap. The opening and ending themes are also very good. The voice acting is great, and although Seina's voice can be strange at first, you grow to love it.
The only real problem with the voice acting is the re-use of one particular voice actor. In the first run of episodes, he voices the guideperson who helps Seina get to the GP academy, but later on, he voices several other characters, and it can be confusing if you don't see the person who is speaking ont he screen.
Story
The story, at first, seems a little weird with a lot of comedic element. By episode 8, you could easily pass the show off as just another fanservice show, but don't let it get you down. Ride it out until episode 10,a nd you'll see that this story has quality, just like any other Tenchi story.
Character
The characters are marvelously done. Each one has his or her own unique taste and personality. Seina with his noble attitude and unfortunate mishaps. Amane has lecherous overtones, and might seem like a pervert, but deep down inside, she has an innocent heart that just wants to be loved. Kiriko has a very motherly way about her, the way she has looked after Seina since he was a child, and how she still loves him and cares for him today. Ryouko Balta with her prim and proper attitude, but underneath, she is a bit insecure about herself, and doesn't know her roots.. you might say she is kind of confused. Neeju Na Malmas, who has the guise of a child, but the mind of an adult. Tarant Shank, evil through and through, but has a certain wekness about him as well. Seiryo Tennan, just like in the Tenchi OVA, has a superiority complex, but even his truer personality shines sometimes in this show, giving way to his more tnder side, showing that he really isn't that bad a guy.
There are so many more characters I could talk about, but let me tell you one more thing - The original Tenchi cast has appearances. Ryo-Ohki in a few episodes, and the whole gang in episode 17 and episode 26, including a new character names Noike.
Value
The value of this show is in its humor and characters. It really connects you to them and makes you want to find out what happens to them next. By the end of the show, you feel like you know each and every one of them, good or bad, as well as anyone you know in real life.
The episodes I watched are raw, but several groups are fansubbing it. I was in Anime-Works, but they have all but broken up due to internal struggles and issues... I was translating for them, but now I don't know what I am doing pertaining to this show. If you don't understand Japanese well enough to watch the raw episodes, let the subbers know that you want to see the show as soon as possible! Maybe they'll get off their butts and finish the subbing before it comes out stateside.
As for stateside release, let me tell you that the news of Funimation liscensing the show is just rumor and speculation. No matter what Anime News Network said, no matter what you heard at a con.. in the end, we do not know who got it and when it's coming out. You want the latest news, don't go anywhere but aicanime.com and the Tenchi Muyo GXP forum there.
Anyway... Watch this show! You will not regret it!

They did a damn awesome job subbing it, though. FUNimation is doing a great job as far as subbed anime, and that's really all I care about. If they manage a good dub, I'll be happy, but it's not something that I am overly worried about.Mr Pilkington wrote:Licensed by Funimation. Why will it suck? If I have to explain just go a head and purchase the infinite wrongness of Fruits Basket dubbed.Fronzel wrote:What'll be wrong with the American version? Unless you're a dub bitch.
However, considering that Tenchi GXP will probably be on Adult Swim, the goodness of the dub could be very important. (I say Adult Swim instead of Toonami because A) I am hopeful that they'll put it on Adult Swim and cut it up less... and B) Tenchi GXP is just as raunchy, if not worse, than the Tenchi OVAs in places, so there's PLENTY of things that would probably end up cut out of the Adult Swim version anyway

See the below image:

'Nuff said. This pic is actually pretty tame in comparison to some of the other stuff that happens in the show

(And yes, I made that pic by taking two screen captures from a vertical panning scene and spliced them together. I am a perv and I lvoe every minute of it

Thank god they kept a good stoyline going
